I cannot say more about Riordan than I will read anything he writes and my kids will also. If he wrote a post-it note list, I might just read that too.

This is a very cute story and has some great ideas and twists. I just wish he had written the next few books in the series.

I have read every Fowl book and I am an adult. My son read them until he was TOO OLD haha, and now my daughter reads them. All of us have enjoyed the books. Colfer has a whimsical way of blending fact, fiction, science fiction, and fantasy. He has a knack.
His stories some how always have a twist or two that keep me guessing and that is why I read his books. I am a continuous reader and can rip a story to shreds because of poor flow, grammer, or just plain poor plot. Colfer can keep me interested to the last word and I love it.
I am an adult. I am a Cardiac Anesthesiologist. I read constantly and I read Colfer.

Oh yes and the Time Paradox is a great adition to the Fowl collection.

louise's greatest hits:
  • Rot & Ruin

    "Quality, entertaining story"

    Overall

    Story

Though this may have been meant as a young adult book, I really believe readers of any age will enjoy it. The characters are very well developed, and the relationship between the main character and his heroic and misunderstood older brother is truly compelling. Combined with the zombie action, a hefty dose of post-apolocolytic bad guys and some coming of age elements for both our young characters, and the next generation after the zombie apolocolypse, I found this a highly entertaining and sometimes very thoughtful and moving adventure. The reader does quite a fine job as well. I highly recommend it!

Though meant for kids, this is a fun little bokk for adults too, especially if you like zombies. The characters are very well done, and though it has some "yuck" moments, it is a well-paced adventure.

  • Z for Zachariah

    "Interesting but a bit troubling"

    Story

This is an interesting though somewhat depressing story, though it tries to end on a hopeful note. The main character is very compelling, and easy to care for. But the scenario is strangely bleak and the situations she finds herself in are painful to experience. It is a survival story, a story of perserverance despite miserable, hopeless situation, and a strange comment on human nature in some ways.

It is odd to class this as a kid story. I think older teens might be appropriate but I don't know if I would say it is right for anyone 13 or under. It deals with some troubling stuff - attempted rape of a young teen, a murder attempt on the same teen by an older man, etc. Not to say that kids can't take it, but it just seems a bit mature in some of its material for children, in my opinion, so parents are warned and may want to listen first.

THe main character feels very real and human and well developed and it is easy to care about her. That said, the other main character, the man who comes into her valley is a bit dispicable and frustrating and her reaction to him is at times frustrating. She has more patience and goodness and strength in her than many would, I think, though it is hard to say as we don't live in a post apocolyptic world where almost no people are left.

Overall, it was a sad but interesting story, and her plight was engaging and she was very likable so easy to follow... But as I said, the material is too mature for kids I think, some of the relationship is odd and frustrating and hard to understand and despite its hopeful note at the end, overall it is a bleak and sad story... Still it was entertaining and I think worth a listen.

    Story

I am really surprised that there are not more reviews of this book, and that it seems so overlooked. Though it is a YA story, I think it is fun for any age. It is thoughtful, intelligent, well-paced, and the characters are very well developed. The reader does a great job bringing it to life. Well worth a listen.

  • "Lovely, unusual ghost story"

    17 of 17 helpful votes

A Certain Slant of Light is a different slant on a ghost story, and I really enjoyed watching the way it progressed. The two main characters are ghosts looking in on the living world, at first experiencing it without being noticed and later going unnoticed for what they really are. The prose is lovely and elegant, the story emotional, and once I got into this it was hard to stop listening. The story felt fully fleshed out, and yet I was left wanting a bit more at the end. That's probably a mark of a great book but for myself I would have prefered just a little bit more info in a couple areas, but overall this was a great listen!

This is very much a love story, so be warned to expect a bit of mush. I found that part of the plot a bit rushed, not in terms of pacing but for the characters, and there were several times I found myself aghast at the lack of foresight shown by the main characters in some ways. Let's just say that not all ghosts haunt Girl Scout meetings, where we were taught to tread through the forest so as to leave as little damage as possible! That's a thought that was with me pretty much throughout the whole book!

This is listed as a young adult novel, but it's one of the most adult ones I've come across and I wouldn't think of limiting this to a teenage audience. This is not at all a kiddie story. There's a good bit of sexual content, which, although never crude, might be something for which parents might want to prescreen for younger teens.

The narrator is just right for the part. She perfectly captures the hushed urgency of the gentle-souled Helen, a ghost desperate to communicate yet terrified of notice.
