  • "Long Live Nancy; A Trip Back in Time"

    Overall

    Story

Nancy Drew was an important part of my childhood. These books helped me to love reading, made me a mystery fan, and (yes!) fostered my feminism, too. For this, I am grateful to all the people who were Carolyn Keene.

Revisiting Nancy is a mixed-bag experience. Of course, the books are not spectacularly well-written. And, in modern terms, our heroine is pretty traditional. The stories are tame.

BUT, Laura Linney reads with a respect for the original excitement many of us experienced when reading Nancy Drew. I love the sound effects and the drama in her voice. It's like being a twelve-year-old again.

If you are in the mood for uncritical nostalgia, go ahead and try "The Secret of Shadow Ranch". Be sure you only select the Drew mysteries that are performed by Laura Linney. Curl up and enjoy a trip back in time!

    Story

The Nancy Drew series is not "The Hunger Games," and many young girls today will find it pretty mundane and unexciting. The authors who were Carolyn Keene in their day do not give us great literature here.

That said, I recommend the Nancy Drew books narrated by Laura Linney. She brings an uncritical freshness and enthusiasm to the old chestnuts! It would be great for a mother or grandmother who was a fan to share this listen with a daughter or granddaughter.

They also make for great before-bed listening, and I mean that in the best way. Forget your cynicism and the problems of the modern world and curl up with Nancy and Laura.

Is the state of the world today getting to you? Nancy Drew books make great "comfort" reads and bring back the simpler days. I have great memories of reading these books as a kid and recently returned to them on Audible. They are marvelous to listen to at bedtime. I love Laura Linney here and have not enjoyed other narrators of the Carolyn Keene books.
Nancy Drew has never meant great literature or sophisticated mystery. Just take her as she is; it's a great change of pace.

C. Sanborn's greatest hits:
  • The Hidden Staircase: Nancy Drew Mystery Stories 2

"Perfect Mystery for young and old!"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

I purchased this audible book for my 8,6, and 4 year old grandchildren and I to listen to on a long trip. They loved it! I had to keep checking to see if they were asleep because they were so quiet. I learned just how interested they were when I turned the book off during heavy traffic, so I could concentrate more on my driving. They began playing, quarreling, and doing all the things they normally would do had we not been listening to the book. As soon as we returned to the car after a stop, they were all telling me to turn their book back on.
The reader did a awesome job of changing voices with the characters. She really made it seem as if we were seeing the performance in person with lots of different actors.

Although the book was originally written for young teens or pre-teens even before I was born, it was still enjoyable for an old lady of 60 like me as well as my grandchildren. I would definitely recommend it to others.

  • The Sign of The Twisted Candle: Nancy Drew, Book 9

"Nancy Drew is great for mature younger listeners!"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story
Would you listen to The Sign of The Twisted Candle again? Why?

My granddaughters are 4 and 6 and my nephew is 8. We listened to this book in the car. They could not wait to get in the car and listen to their book. For those of you who have traveled long distances with young children, you know it can be quite challenging at times. However, with a good book to listen to, the trips are now a breeze. Nancy Drew provided suspense, but was written on a level that they could understand, but kept me interested as well. Often, there were teachable moments, too. They did not realize that when these books were written, there were no cell phones. This gave me an opportunity for a little history. The four year old was not quite as interested but she stayed quiet anyway. This book allowed the kids to use their imaginations, too. Also, Nancy is a kind and caring person. There is a moral to the story--and the bad guys always get caught. There is no killing or any of that gory stuff either. Like I said, the perfect story for younger children !!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Hannah is my favorite character. She is only the Drew housekeeper. She has helped to raise Nancy since she was 4 years old and loves her like a daughter. Although the book never says this, it is obvious from her concern for Nancy.

What does Danica Reese bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The change in voices gives each character an individuality and makes the story much easier to follow then if it was just read. It makes the book much more fun and interesting!
