    Story

This was a great listen for both young and older alike. I think I liked this more than my 10-year-old daughter because I grew up in the book's time frame and lived within 10 miles of where Tammy lived. The main character was feisty with a soft side. The lesson that the book told was right on without being overbearing. A wonderful family listen.

Muscle Man McGinty can certainly tell some whoppers, but this time he's done the unthinkable. He bragged he can beat the entire block in a game of kickball! On Ramble Street, tough talk about kickball cannot be ignored. For Tamara Ann Simpson, however, this is great news. Now she'll finally be able to prove to everyone what a wormy little runt Muscle Man really is. Of course things would be a lot easier if her best friend Kebsie Grobser were here to help her.

I listened to this with my nine-year-old daughter in five short sessions as she read along with the more-than-500-page printed version. Even if you do not listen with a young child, get the printed version. The hundreds of illustrations in the book are magnificent. The recorded version is also enhanced by several mood-creating sound effects which, in my opinion, really added to the enjoyment of the story. The narrator was magnificent in his renderings of all the characters, particularly Georges. If you are hesitant about using a credit for a book that is less than three hours long, make the leap with this one. I guarantee you will choose to listen to it several times because the experience is just that good.

This was a fun listen with my 10-year-old daughter. It was made even more enjoyable by the fact that we have a beagle and it was easy to imagine him (Walter) in the role of Cromwell. The narrator was excellent and did an especially good job with Howie and Elka. This is not great literature but it didn't need to be.

Ian's greatest hits:
  • Peter Pan

    "Essential childhood reading"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

I never read this book as a child. Neither was it read to me and I thought that Peter Pan was a cartoo character until I was an adult. I missed out.

If you have children then buy the book and read it to them. If you can't or won't then the next best thing is to let Jim Dale read it to them for you. His delivery is excellent and carries just the right balance of restraint and enthusiasm.

An excellent presentation of a classic story.

  • The Jungle Book

    "Excellent book - dreadful narration"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

Kipling was a genius of language and everything of his that I have read had poetry running through it. This book is no exception and the characterisation of the different animals is brilliant. The premise and the story of this book are known to most of us and the text is beautifully constructed.

Sadly the narration gets in the way of this superb text. The best narrators are transparent, simply letting the material come through without ever being the focus of your attention. At times this narrator sounds like she is reading a grocery list and at others manages to completely miss inflection and intonation in a way that deflects your attention away from the storyline because it is so annoying. I found myself unable to concentrate on the story

My rating would have been 5 stars but for the narration.

  • Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog)

    "Beautiful writing, beautiful reading"

    Story

This classic proves that great literature needn't be hard work. It is light, funny, thoughtful, informative and , occassionally , deep. There are magnificent one liners and great characters - especially Montmorency.

The reading is excellent. Martin Jarvis was born to read English humour and when the stuff he is reading is a as good as this the only problem is that there isn't more of it.

  • My Life with the Chimpanzees

    "Feels a bit lightweight"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

I probably misunderstood the ambitions of this title. I think I was hoping for more insight into Goodall's work with primates than this title sets out to give. Basically I was hoping for chimps featuring Jane Goodall and what you get is Jane Goodall featuring chimps. As an inspirational story for children it's probably great but as science or natural history less so. I'm afraid that I also find it offputting when scientists make reference to supernatural beliefs in their writings. Personal prejudice. I'm stacked full of them.

So basically this was interesting but not what I was hoping for when I purchased it. Goodall is a competent narrator as well.

  • "Buy it for the first book."

    13 of 13 helpful votes

The narration in this story is outstanding! I thoroughly enjoyed the first book and was pleased to learn how true to the story Disney's "The Sword in the Stone" movie acutally was. The rest of the story focuses the affair between Lancelot and Guinevere. The moments when Arthur comes into the story are touching and my favorite parts, but they are few and far between. There are also several great side stories along the way that make it worth reading.

The final book, as others have said is completely different. It doesn’t really add anything to the story. It’s interesting, but only if you are really into sociopolitical theory, anthropology, and biology. That doesn’t make sense to you? Give it a try and see what I mean.
