While on vacation and driving the length of California back up from San Diego I downloaded this book for my family to listen to as we drove the long slog of I5. What a great choice!!! My 5 year old daughter was engrossed by this story and did not speak a peep for 6 hours straight as we drove the last 400 miles from Northern Cali to Washington. My wife was also engrossed and for the first time on that vacation I was able to experience a bit of quiet, the whole family quietly listened to the antics of Ramona and enjoyed her little story.
About the story itself...I never read these books as a child so was unfamiliar with them when I started. Basically this series follows the growth of a precocious little girl, named Ramona, and all her little innocent escapades as she grows up. The first book starts with Ramona age 4 and each subsequent book she is a year older. (well.. at least so far, we have only gotten through 4 books) Nothing huge happens here, no monsters need defeating, no saving the world, just little Ramona trying to learn how to grow up and be a good person. Her trials are things like not being sure her kindergarten teacher likes her, or dealing with the fallout of a bad tantrum. They are small things, but they are told beautifully and I actually think my 5 (soon to be 6) year old daughter enjoyed them all the more because she could so well relate to the feelings (and trials) Ramona was having and experiencing. As adults, my wife and I found the stories endearing and funny as the exploits of Ramona are very familiar to anybody who has had (or has) young children. Ms. Channing’s performance is wonderful, and she really brings to life all the characters. I highly recommend this series for anybody with young children. One thing though, Ms. Cleary sometimes gives away (or almost) the secrets of things like Santa Claus/tooth fairy/etc... Early in this series Ramona loses a tooth and Ms. Cleary alludes to (but does not actually explicitly reveal) Daddy being the actual tooth fairy, that part takes about 2 min....you can easily see it coming and you may want to skip ahead if you want to make sure that you can preserve that little fiction.

I purchased this book for my 5 Year old daughter and I to listen to while in the car (I can only take so much Lady Gaga). This is a delightful story that had my daughter (and myself) engrossed. Be forewarned, it bear very little..if any..resemblance to the movie. My daughter tells me that we did see the movie, and that it was indeed very different. If it is the movie I think I remember, well then about the only thing in common with the book is the name of the lead character and the group of Vikings (if that). The book is actually much better in my mind, and a better story for children as it teaches that sometimes what people call "ordinary" can in fact be "extraordinary" and that appearances can be deceiving. In other words, the story is about an "ordinary" boy who becomes a hero, despite what his peers say to him. A great story. Highly recommend it.

    Story

OK...this is one of those books that adults are going to have to sit through. As an adult, this book is too simplistic and clearly geared to young children to really be enjoyable. That being said, it is not a torture to listen to it. My daughter on the other hand LOVED it, she talked about it all the time, and she even teased/reassured her younger sister that she was not so quite as "naughty" as the namesake of the book. Indeed, this is the first book that she "rated" herself...she literally told me how many stars I should rate this book when she saw me on the website.
One of the nice things about this book is that the chapters are nicely divided by "story", each chapter is a stand-alone little story about "my naughty little sister" and what she and her friends were up to. I think my daughter liked the book so much because these stories were simple, realistic, and (I suspect) possibly true. She is able to relate to the stories very well, and I think it made her feel better to realize that little sisters are the same the world over. I do recommend this book, and my daughter highly recommends it.

  • The Modern Scholar: Children's Literature: Between the Covers

    "Really valuable information here"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

Initially, I was disappointed that Kimberley Reynolds lacks the dynamic and conversational style that is so desirable in an Audible course.

But, wait. The information packed into this set of lectures is so interesting and so valuable that I soon forgave, and actually came to like, the rather stiff delivery. This is a serious presentation of the history not only of children's literature but of the changing concept of childhood itself.

Most of us choose books for our children based on what we have enjoyed ourselves, what we think will interest the kids and advance their reading skills, and on the pure entertainment value of the material. This course will likely not change that, but having a more scholarly foundation about the psychological and developmental benefits of reading for young people at different stages will offer a great advantage for parents, grandparents, teachers, librarians and others who help children choose appropriate books.

The literature covered includes analysis of books for all ages of childhood, from infancy to young adult. When the subjects got a bit too esoteric for me (mostly in the YA lectures), I found the PDF study guide to be very helpful in deciding which lectures would interest me most. Although the analyses sometimes offer more detail than many of us ultimately want, I believe there is much general and particular information here that will be of interest and value to all parents and literature lovers.

Another benefit is the timely nature of the course. Harry Potter is discussed, as are "The Hunger Games" series. Professor Reynolds touches on new technologies like digital and interactive books and the endless merchandise tie-ins which are peddled to children on the media. There's a bit near the end about the effects of tough economic times on youngsters. This is up-to-date stuff!

  • The Secret of Shadow Ranch: Nancy Drew Mystery Stories 5

    Story

Nancy Drew was an important part of my childhood. These books helped me to love reading, made me a mystery fan, and (yes!) fostered my feminism, too. For this, I am grateful to all the people who were Carolyn Keene.

Revisiting Nancy is a mixed-bag experience. Of course, the books are not spectacularly well-written. And, in modern terms, our heroine is pretty traditional. The stories are tame.

BUT, Laura Linney reads with a respect for the original excitement many of us experienced when reading Nancy Drew. I love the sound effects and the drama in her voice. It's like being a twelve-year-old again.

If you are in the mood for uncritical nostalgia, go ahead and try "The Secret of Shadow Ranch". Be sure you only select the Drew mysteries that are performed by Laura Linney. Curl up and enjoy a trip back in time!

    Story

The Nancy Drew series is not "The Hunger Games," and many young girls today will find it pretty mundane and unexciting. The authors who were Carolyn Keene in their day do not give us great literature here.

That said, I recommend the Nancy Drew books narrated by Laura Linney. She brings an uncritical freshness and enthusiasm to the old chestnuts! It would be great for a mother or grandmother who was a fan to share this listen with a daughter or granddaughter.

They also make for great before-bed listening, and I mean that in the best way. Forget your cynicism and the problems of the modern world and curl up with Nancy and Laura.

So sad that Maurice Sendak is no longer with us. This book, however, coming out almost literally on the day he died, stands as something of a tribute to his wit and style - and that of Stephen Colbert and Tom Hanks.
I don't want to make a review longer than the book (!), but, shucks, who wouldn't like this??

John Keating as always, did a fabulous job of narration.

As an avid horse lover I am always looking for another great horse book. This book is written from the point of view of a horse during WWI and tells of the harsh realities faced by both people and the horses. It doesn't go into so much detail that it wouldn't be safe for children however.
