It's rare that a non-fiction book can be this exciting, this compelling, and this gory! Hot Zone certainly gets detailed, and I loved every second of it. Preston did an OUTSTANDING job researching this topic, and really becoming an expert on it. The way he crafted a story that will keep you guessing is nothing short of genius. Narrarator is outstanding. Overall, I'd rather read/listen to this non-fiction book than ANY of the fictional virus stories I've read. Yes, it's THAT good!

A highly infectious, deadly virus from the central African rain forest suddenly appears in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. There is no cure. In a few days, 90 percent of its victims are dead. A secret military SWAT team of soldiers and scientists is mobilized to stop the outbreak of this exotic "hot" virus. The Hot Zone tells this dramatic story, giving a hair-raising account of the appearance of rare and lethal viruses and their "crashes" into the human race. Shocking, frightening, and impossible to ignore, The Hot Zone proves that truth really is scarier than fiction.

  • "Every Person with Boobs Should Read..."

    Story

Every woman should read this, ESPECIALLY if you're going to have children. It goes into great detail about the environmental and dietary pollutants that can poison breast milk. Tells you the things you should stay away from. It also discusses the benefits of different tests you can have done on your breasts, blood, and breast milk.

If you're a guy (like me) and your wife is pregnant, it wouldn't be a bad idea to read this, just to familiarize yourself with all the options out there. It touches briefly on male breast cancer, which I found fascinating--- and scary. In all honesty, if you're a guy, you probably won't enjoy this book. However, it's best to take the approach that you'll be reading it more as a favor to your significant other.

The reader is very good. It's a science book, but written more like satire, which should hold your interest.

deborah's greatest hits:
  • The Great Influenza: The Epic Story of the Deadliest Plague in History

    "Great Influenza"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

Wonderfully narrated by Scott Brick, this is more a history of American medicine at the turn of the century and how public health and the military both succeeded and failed to recognize, confront, and solve a major health crisis. It is politically intriguing, and provides a more complete picture of how the flu was able to take so many lives, as well as how Pres. Wilson used WWI to censor media and round up radicals. For those interested in the history of WWI, this is a book that presents an indispensible part of the picture.

  • Scourge: The Once and Future Threat of Smallpox

"Everything you wanted to know about Smallpox"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

Seminal book on the science and politics of Smallpox throughout history, and the tug of war between states to hold on to the virus for later, possibly destructive, uses. Gives you a great look at the workings of the WHO, and public health in general. Well researched. The author was robably was granted access to WHO and CDC files, naming patients, dates, medical files, etc. The ending is so political that one loses track, but in general, a great book well narrated.

  • The Demon Under The Microscope

"One of the Best of the Medical History Audiobooks"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

Well researched and narrated, this is the story of Sulfa, the pre-curser antibiotic to penicillin, and the stories of its discovery, use, and consequences for public health. Though lengthy, I finished it in two days. For those who are interested in the subject, or medical professionals, the book covers a class of drugs no longer studied. Wonderful book that had me checking wiki for further info on topics.

  • Germs, Genes, & Civilization: How Epidemics Shaped Who We Are Today

    "Worst narration ever"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

The content of this book is clear, though there are too many subchapters. The narration, on the other hand, was inappropriate juvenile. Summer McStravick has the most sing-song voice, and while this would be patronizing and annoying with any audiobook, it is truly inappropriate for reading a book on epidemics and mass death. I could hear her smiling as she says phrases like, "And so cholera killed millions on both coasts."

This material is more adequately covered in other audiobooks, and better narrated as well.

I have a novice's interest in neuroplasticity and related issues. Barbara Strauch has done a great job of bringing me up to speed on the latest understanding of the brain and mid-life. Along the way she clearly distinguishes what we know about cognitive development (no evidence for the Empty Nest Syndrome) and what we don't know (what foods will help us gain mental strength).

The prose is nontechnical and readily available to the uninitiated. Nona Pipes is up to her best in the reading. It will be of interest to a broad spectrum of listeners. Give it a try.

No disease the world has ever known even remotely resembles the great influenza epidemic of 1918. Presumed to have begun when sick farm animals infected soldiers in Kansas, spreading and mutating into a lethal strain as troops carried it to Europe, it exploded across the world with unequaled ferocity and speed. It killed more people in 20 weeks than AIDS has killed in 20 years; it killed more people in a year than the plagues of the Middle Ages killed in a century.

Oliver Sacks' The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat tells the stories of individuals afflicted with fantastic perceptual and intellectual aberrations: patients who have lost their memories and with them the greater part of their pasts; who are no longer able to recognize people and common objects; who are stricken with violent tics and grimaces or who shout involuntary obscenities; whose limbs have become alien; who have been dismissed as retarded yet are gifted with uncanny artistic or mathematical talents.

Atul Gawande explores how doctors strive for best performance in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. His stories of diligence and ingenuity take us to battlefield surgical tents in Iraq, to labor and delivery rooms in Boston, to a polio outbreak in India, and to malpractice courtrooms around the country. He discusses the ethical dilemmas of doctors' participation in lethal injections, examines the influence of money on medicine, and recounts the astoundingly contentious history of hand washing.

Do you state your problem clearly to the doctor, or are you a 'while I'm here' or 'hand-on-the-door-knob' patient, stating your main concern just as you're about to leave? Do you save your ailments up and then go to the doctor with a 'list'? Do you write down what your doctor says, and if not, how well do you remember it? Surveys show that a staggering 40% of patients go away with a completely different message to that given by their GP, while a third leave the surgery with their questions unasked because they feel too time-pressured or stressed to ask.

Marc Sedaka stood by while he and his wife endured endless rounds of drug therapies, 16 artificial inseminations, 10 in-vitro fertilizations, three miscarriages, and finally, a gestational surrogate (“womb for rent”) who carried their twin girls to term. He was as supportive and loving as he could be, but he really wished he'd had a book like What He Can Expect When She's Not Expecting during the process.

Osteoporosis affects around three million people in the UK, and bone loss can begin as early as the late teens and early 20s. Broken bones due to osteoporosis mean that the disease is at a very advanced stage, and, while doctors can help greatly with modern drugs, some damage is irreversible. But, equally, early attention can prevent osteoporosis getting to this crippling stage, often for decades. This book looks at the best ways to keep bones young, strong and healthy, with advice on diet, exercise and lifestyle.

Using clear and direct language, they look beyond the limits of conventional treatment to show how creating an individualized, evidence-based, and integrated approach that targets the whole person - mind, body, and spirit - not just the addiction, can provide a sure path to recovery.

Playwright, author, and activist Eve Ensler has devoted her life to the female body - how to talk about it, how to protect and value it. Yet she spent much of her life disassociated from her own body - a disconnection brought on by her father’s sexual abuse and her mother’s remoteness. “Because I did not, could not inhabit my body or the Earth,” she writes, “I could not feel or know their pain.” But Ensler is shocked out of her distance.
