Will Patton is as eloquent and captivating as Burke's colorful and passionate writing style. It is a tragic story, with so many unusual and ingenious characters, the suspense seems overshadowed.

This is a book I did not want to end. I love Will Patton's work in the movies, and I am more impressed with his reading skills.

Dave Robicheaux returns in another Bayou adventure, this one more gruesome and gut-wrenching than any that have come before. Hurricane Katrina has ravaged New Orleans, leaving the streets and buildings flooded and the city awash with opportunists, looters, and vicious criminals. There is no order, no law. Police are shooting randomly at innocent people, prison guards have abandoned their posts, and bodies float through the streets and hang from trees.

This is a really great mystery featuring one of the best detective characters in the genre and by one of the best writers of our time. I just dont like the reading by Cariou. He makes it read like a work of nonfiction with a "just the facts" demeanor.

Nevertheless the story is excellent. I am never dissapointed with any of Connolley's novels.

When Hackberry Holland became sheriff of a tiny Texas town near the Mexican border, he'd hoped to leave certain things behind: his checkered reputation, his haunted dreams, and his obsessive memories of the good life with his late wife, Rie. But the discovery of the bodies of nine illegal aliens, machine-gunned to death and buried in a shallow grave behind a church, soon makes it clear that he won't escape so easily.

    Story

Hannah Griffin is a social worker with a caseload involving children neglected or abused by families. One day she receives a package at her office addressed to her as Hannah Logan Griffin. She is terrified, because she has not used her maiden name Logan for over 20 years and she didn’t know how anyone traced the name to her. When Hannah was a teenager, a fire took place on her family farm which killed her two brothers, and allegedly her mother. Hannah had done her best not to remember her past. Now, someone was forcing her to revisit her past. Hannah had never allowed the full impact of the horror of that night to take hold, so now memories began to surface. Hannah decides that she will not be able to rest until she determines what happened twenty years ago, and whether or not her mother died that night or is still alive. A very good book, action-packed with several twists and turns. This is a new author for me, but I will definitely read more books by him.

    Story

Four old men start the day by winning a modest sum of money which even split between them will be a nice little sum. They go out to celebrate. But, by the end of the day, one man is dead, murdered in his bed with 68 stab wounds. Another of the men has disappeared. And within a couple of days, the landlady from the apartment building of the murdered man also goes missing. Then, the man’s wife comes forward and confesses to the murder. She is convicted and hangs herself in jail. Munster and other officers don’t really believe the wife was strong enough to have inflicted the damage and Munster at least feels she’s protecting someone else, but who? And what happened to the other two people who disappeared? Are all these cases connected? A very good book.

    Story

First, to repeat myself for the thousandth time, I’d read almost anything Will Patton recorded, including the telephone book. James Lee Burke’s writing and Will Patton’s narration do not disappoint in this latest Dave Robicheaux book. Dave is in a recovery unit in New Orleans after his injuries from the last book, The Glass Rainbow. He’s been getting morphine and having weird dreams, so when a creole girl he knows shows up in his room and leaves him an Ipod with a blues song, “Creole Belle” recorded on it, no one believes him. Especially since the girl and her sister have both disappeared. But the girl, Tee Jollie Melton, keeps calling him even when he’s at home, still unbelieved, and keeps telling him about a horrible place where she is being held, but not able to tell him where that place is. Then her sister, Blue, turns up dead in the river in a block of ice. This book finds Dave and Clete involved with a group of mercenaries connected to a big oil spill. Clete’s daughter, Gretchen, shows up although she doesn’t know for a while that she’s Clete’s daughter. She and Allafair become friends. Dave is unhappy about the friendship as Gretchen seems to have connections to the mob, while Clete is very protective of his daughter. Again, this is a wonderful book which builds to a teeth-grinding climax. Very good as usual.

  • The Burning: A Novel

"First in the Maeve Kerrigan series."

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

This is Casey’s debut novel involving Maeve Kerrigan, a bright and ambitious detective on the murder squad. She is willing to give all she has to the job, to bring murderers to justice. This puts her in conflict with her boy friend, Ian, and her parents, all of whom don’t want her to be a policewoman at all and think it’s too dangerous for her. She also has to fight against her male counterparts who make cracks about her being a woman, and who feel that her “compassion” gets in the way of her judgment. At present they are tracking down a serial killer, dubbed “the burning man” by the press because he has killed four women, savaged their looks unbelievably so as to disguise who they are, and then set them on fire. There is a fifth victim, who fits some, but not all of the MO of the burning man. Maeve doesn’t think it’s the same killer but a copycat killer, and she sets out to find the murderer while working also on the serial killer case. In some ways this was a compelling book. The character of Maeve reminds me of Paddy Sheehan, Denise Mina’s character, fighting for respect from her family and from her male colleagues. The use of alternating viewpoints in this novel didn’t work for me. The narrator did very well with all the characters, portraying them. But with the alternating voices, particularly if the character now speaking isn’t named, which happened a couple of times, even the best of narrators couldn’t have avoided some confusion for the reader. Having said this, I liked Maeve as a character and am willing to read more books in this series.

I'm a Reginald Hill fan and especially enjoy Pascoe and Dalziel but holy guacamole !! Brain Glover is not the right narrator!!! This is the second time I've bit on a R. Hill book only to find a poor performance. Note to self: Pay attention to name of narrator!!

Frankly, I don't know if this is a good story or not -- I could barely understand most of it and could feel my ears clamping down the rest of the time.

Body and soul. The song. That's what London constable and sorcerer's apprentice Peter Grant first notices when he examines the corpse of Cyrus Wilkins, part-time jazz drummer and full-time accountant, who dropped dead of a heart attack while playing a gig at Soho's 606 Club. The notes of the old jazz standard are rising from the body - a sure sign that something about the man's death was not at all natural but instead supernatural. Body and soul - they're also what Peter will risk as he investigates a pattern of similar deaths in and around Soho.

Dragnet was perhaps the most famous and influential police procedural drama in media history. The series gave millions of audience members a feel for the boredom and drudgery, as well as the danger and heroism, of real-life police work.

Actor and producer Jack Webb's aims in Dragnet were for realism and unpretentious acting. He achieved both goals, and Dragnet remains a key influence on subsequent police dramas in many media.
