    This is a marvelous twist-a- thon where nobody is even close to the way they appear. The plot is so easy to "spoil", I'll just say you won't be disappointed.
    Barbara Rosenblat is a genius narrator. She does men convincingly, making boy-girl conversations seem like two actors working. But the voices she gives the women, whiskey-soaked and cigarette damaged, recall noir femme-fatales from Lauren Bacall to Kathleen Turner.
    I listened to this book in black and white!

    This is typical Thompson. That is to say: it's dark, it has tempting babes, it has a straight forward plot that flips every time the listener gets comfortable. There has been discussion of the ending, but remember: this is about a crazy person!
    The narration is suited to the story, his voices are perfect for the characters, and the pace is noir creepy. This is a fun listening experience.

    Different kind of book, this one was published 30 years after the author's death. James M Cain wrote "The Postman Always Rings Twice" which was twice made into a movie. Cain was most famous as a writer in the 30's and 40's and he was one of the original writers of crime and sin before it became mainstream. He was also know for writing about femme fatale's, women who were caught up in a bad marriage or bad situation and couldn't see a way out and how that played out. "The Cocktail Waitress" fits this mold. The person who got this last novel published was a Cain fan who heard the book existed and went to work looking for it. It took him 9 years. He found some of it in the Library of Congress, some with the author's last agent, who was also dead. He put all the pieces together, edited it, and this is the result. The author was in his 80's when he wrote this. If you're a Cain fan or like these types of books, it's worth the effort, it's a fairly short book.

    I feel like Kurt Wallander is an old friend now, as much as he could have a friend. I've listened to all of his books on Audible and enjoyed them all thoroughly. He's roughly the same age as I and the life issues he encounters, the thoughts he has about life are much the same as I and I suspect many others. I googled Skane, Sweden, Wallander's home county, and there was a link saying come visit the setting where the Wallander books took place, that would be fun to do sometime. I hope more Mankell/Wallander books come to Audible!

    This one has our "Beach Bum" hero in a western city surrounded by desert. The action starts off fast and every time I thought I had figured out who the bad guy was, they got killed! This story really keeps you thinking!
