This book is one of the rare war chronicles that reads like a novel. I particularly like how the author develops the character of the leaders on both sides. Also, the history leading up to the conflict is written well. The only negative I can think of was the lack of maps inherent with any audiobook. In this case you REALLY need them unless you are a geography expert on the region. I downloaded some maps of Israel and surronding countries before and during the war. I highly recommend you do the same.

In Israel and the West, it is called the Six Day War. In the Arab world, it is known as the June War or, simply, as "the Setback". Never has a conflict so short, unforeseen, and largely unwanted by both sides so transformed the world. The Yom Kippur War, the war in Lebanon, the Camp David accords, the controversy over Jerusalem and Jewish settlements in the West Bank, the intifada, and the rise of Palestinian terror are all part of the outcome of those six days.

I am so glad that I invested the many hours it took to listen to all three volumes of this fantastic history.
This book is far different and far better than I expected. It truly is a narrative and not a dull history treatise. It is written impartially from neither a Southern nor Northern perspective. The noble intentions and motivations of participants from both sides come through vividly.
You should read all three volumes. It will give you a broad perspective on the Civil War. Unlike any other history I've read on this war, these books will impart an understanding of what went on in the West, the North, and such places as Florida and Arkansas. I hardly knew the war touched those last two states.
Anyone who has seen the Ken Burns Civil War series will see the similarity to the amusing anecdotes related by Shelby Foote in that series. If you enjoyed his contributions to that show and have any level of interest in the American Civil War, you will enjoy this great book!

For the fourth time, the Army of the Potomac (now under the control of Burnside) attempts to take Richmond, resulting in the bloodbath at Fredericksburg. Blake's greatest hits:
  • A Terrible Glory: Custer and the Little Bighorn

    "Thoroughly Enjoyable Page Turner"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

Most likely few history readers aren't familiar with at least one version of "Custer's Last Stand." A Terrible Glory goes much deeper than retelling the popular version of events. James Donovan uses extensive research to form a brilliant and compelling narrative of individual soldiers and officers and how they all ended up in such a mess on the hills above the Little Bighorn River. The author does a great job explaining the grudges and rivalries among Custer and his senior officers as well as painting a picture of the political context in which Custer was embroiled. As a result, the popular myth of a glory-seeking Custer stumbling to his own demise should be finally removed from the collective perception of events. The narration is perfectly matched to the narrative creating a whole work that you won't want to end.

  • Tears in the Darkness: The Story of the Bataan Death March and Its Aftermath

"A Wonderful Marriage of Story, Words and Narration"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

This is how history is supposed to be written, and narrated. Michael and Elizabeth Norman present a powerful work stitching together the overall story of horrific events with the common thread of a central soldier, Bud Steele, and a few other American and Japanese who appear throughout the captivating pages. Michael Pritchard delivers a brilliant interpretation of the text with a voice that is sensitive at all times to the mood of the moment - soft when necessary, urgent when called for, and always entertaining. The authors go deep into the psyche of the ordinary Japanese soldiers and their campaign commander to help the reader understand how the horrible events that took place were part of a chain of seeming inevitability. This work is an admirable marriage of comprehensive research, skillful writing and a narration of artistry. If there is a fault it is in leaving the fate of some of the people mentioned in the text hanging in historical mystery. Even so, this is a fantastic read and will probably rank among your favorites.

  • We Who Are Alive and Remain: Untold Stories from the Band of Brothers

"Only for the Avid Easy Company Readers"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

If you're an avid Easy Company reader and you've read everything else, you'll find a few nuggets buried in this work. It was pleasant hearing about the familiar places again: Curahee, Foy, Carentan and the rest. The author describes this work as his effort to give a voice to every soldier who was on the Easy Company roster whose stories have not been told. To use a baseball analogy, if you're a big fan of a World Series winning team, you might want to know the first hand stories of everyone who was on the roster during the season, regardless of how brief or how uninteresting, but chances not. That is what the author has done here, in the form of first-person responses to his questions. But rather than hearing their own voices, those voices are narrated in about 20 or so different accepts. The narration by George K. Wilson is brilliant, but the overall effect is a bit ridiculous. At the end of the book, there are a few interviews with children of Easy Company soldiers recalling their fathers. The interview with Herbert Sobel's son is very interesting and revealing and I gave this review one extra star just for that interview. If you haven't read Band of Brothers, this book is definitely not for you. Otherwise, read any or all of the other good biographies of Easy Company soldiers, including the book by the same author on Lt. Buck Compton, before reading this book.

  • The Wild Blue: The Men and Boys Who Flew the B-24s Over Germany

"Not up to Ambrose's Usual Standards"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

The late Stephen Ambrose is rightly considered among the great history writers of our time. I've read most of his works and have never finished one without being completely satisfied, until reading The Wild Blue. On the positive side, if you want a general overview of how it felt to train for and fly or crew a B-24 during the WWII, The Wild Blue does an adequate job of it. But the magic Ambrose used in finding a unique story to tell of a group of men brought together by a common thread, such as in Band of Brothers, or Undaunted Courage, is totally lacking in this work. The majority of this book is a collection of completely random vignettes of B-24 fliers and crew. Ambrose tries to weave a story thinly by using the crew of George McGovern, but the majority of this book is just one random person after another. By the second or third hour he's thrown out so many names and pained so many mini biographies that the result is the reader has no connection whatsoever to his narrative. When the Italian theater combat chapters begin, he throws out so many statistics for each action: planes lost and damaged, tonnage of bombs on target, crews lost, that it all becomes a jumble of facts and strangers. When the McGovern crew is finally firmly latched onto for the final couple hours of the book, it turns out their story is not particularly interesting. Not to belittle their contribution, but there's absolutely nothing interesting in that particular crew or their personal or combat experiences. To diffuse this fault, Ambrose routinely throws in stories about other fliers and crews that actually did have unique stories, but those characters have no connection to his narrative. The narration is neither bad nor good but suits this work that is equally unspectacular.

Even if you think you know quite a bit about the Greek/Persian wars, the Peloponnesian war and the wars between Rome & Carthage, Prof Shutt provides a lecture with interesting surprises and interpretations of what happened a couple of thousand years ago, how it has been remembered (rightly or wrongly) and how it is relevant to the world of today (surprisingly so).

This course addresses three wars fought in antiquity, each of which had - even 2,000 years and more later - a decisive effect in shaping our communal sense of who we are, not only in Europe, but throughout the European cultural diaspora, in the Americas, in Oceania, and to some degree, at least, in Asia and Africa as well - wherever, in short, Western values hold.

It is the 20th century's unrivaled epic: At a staggering price, the United States and its allies liberated Europe and vanquished Hitler. In the first two volumes of his best-selling Liberation Trilogy, Rick Atkinson recounted the history of how the American-led coalition fought its way from North Africa and Italy to the threshold of victory. Now he tells the most dramatic story of all - the titanic battle in Western Europe. D-Day marked the commencement of the war's final campaign, and Atkinson's astonishingly fresh account of that enormous gamble sets the pace for the masterly narrative that follows.

He goes deep into al Qaeda-held territory in Yemen and walks the streets of Mogadishu with CIA-backed warlords. We also meet the survivors of US night raids and drone strikes - including families of US citizens targeted for assassination by their own government - who reveal the human consequences of the dirty wars the United States struggles to keep hidden.

The liberation of Europe and the destruction of the Third Reich is a story of courage and enduring triumph, of calamity and miscalculation. In this first volume of the Liberation Trilogy, Rick Atkinson shows why no modern learner can understand the ultimate victory of the Allied powers without a grasp of the great drama that unfolded in North Africa in 1942 and 1943. That first year of the Allied war was a pivotal point in American history, the moment when the United States began to act like a great power.

In An Army at Dawn - winner of the Pulitzer Prize - Rick Atkinson provided a dramatic and authoritative history of the Allied triumph in North Africa. Now, in The Day of Battle, he follows the American and British armies as they invade Sicily in July 1943, attack Italy two months later, and then fight their way, mile by bloody mile, north toward Rome. The Italian campaign's outcome was never certain; in fact, President Roosevelt, Prime Minister Churchill, and their military advisors bitterly debated whether an invasion of the so-called soft underbelly of Europe was even wise.

Four US Navy SEALS departed one clear night in early July, 2005 for the mountainous Afghanistan-Pakistan border for a reconnaissance mission. Their task was to document the activity of an al Qaeda leader rumored to have a small army in a Taliban stronghold. Five days later, only one of those Navy SEALS made it out alive. This is the story of the only survivor of Operation Redwing, SEAL team leader Marcus Luttrell, and the extraordinary firefight that led to the largest loss of life in American Navy SEAL history.

Four days before Christmas in 1943, a badly damaged American bomber struggled to fly over wartime Germany. At its controls was a 21-year-old pilot. Half his crew lay wounded or dead. It was their first mission. Suddenly a sleek, dark shape pulled up on the bomber’s tail - a German Messerschmitt fighter. Worse, the German pilot was an ace, a man able to destroy the American bomber with the squeeze of a trigger.

From award-winning journalist and combat veteran Michael Hirsh comes the thrilling inside story of the Air Force's pararescue operations in Afghanistan. The first journalist to be embedded with an Air Force combat unit in the war on terrorism, Hirsh flew from Moody Air Force Base, Georgia, with the 71st Rescue Squadron to their expeditionary headquarters at a secret location in Central Asia. Unparalleled access to the pararescue jumpers - or PJs - as well as to the courageous men and women who fly them where they have to go, often under enemy fire, allowed Michael Hirsh to uncover incredible stories of courage.

A tale that redefines the ordinary soldier in the Second World War, The Deserters is a breathtaking work of historical reportage, weaving together the lives of forgotten servicemen even as it overturns the assumptions and prejudices of an era. The Deserters reveals that ordinary soldiers viewed "desertion" as a natural part of conflict, as unexpected and inexplicable as bravery. The Deserters moves beyond the false extremes of courage and cowardice to reveal the true experience of the Allied soldier.

Revealing the "whole" Lee in this enthralling, detailed saga, Thomas portrays him as a man driven by the paradoxes in his own personality. Here is the Lee who is both a legend and a man. Heroic and larger than life in battle; insecure and unfulfilled in private life.

Kyle masterfully argues that guns have played a fascinating, indispensable, and often under-appreciated role in our national story. He carefully chose ten guns to help tell his story, ranging from the American long rifle to the modern M-16, and uses these guns as a platform for exploring American history.

Bill was massive. He had power, intelligence, and unmatched courage. In performance and character he stood above all the other 200,000 Australian horses sent to the Middle East in the Great War. But as war horses go he had one serious problem. No one could ride him but one man - Major Michael Shanahan. Some even thought Bill took a sneering pleasure in watching would-be riders hit the dust. Bill the Bastard is the remarkable tale of a bond between a determined trooper and his stoic but cantankerous mount. They fought together.

Authors Robin Moore and Michael Lennon team up in this exciting new novel to tell the "fictionalized" stories of the men who have risked it all for the U.S.A.: the Green Berets. They take us from firefights on the Cambodian border during the Vietnam War to the streets and alleyways of Iraq today. They teach us what it was really like to patrol the streets of Mogadishu in the days of Black Hawk Down. They show the horror that was Saddam's Iraq during the first Gulf War. They take us to the moonscape that is Afghanistan in search of the Taliban. The Wars of the Green Berets continues the saga of Moore's classic The Green Berets, revealing more than a few tantalizing secrets and anecdotes for the first time.

All American presidents are commanders in chief by law. Few perform as such in practice. In Roosevelt’s Centurions, distinguished historian Joseph E. Persico reveals how, during World War II, Franklin D. Roosevelt seized the levers of wartime power like no president since Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. Declaring himself "Dr. Win-the-War", FDR assumed the role of strategist in chief, and, though surrounded by star-studded generals and admirals, he made clear who was running the war. FDR was a hands-on war leader, involving himself in everything from choosing bomber targets to planning naval convoys to the design of landing craft.
