  • "A Rare Gem of a Short Story"

    Overall

    Story

Dostoevsky did not write many short stories so this is a rare gem. This is a very, very good short story narrated excellently. It is dark, surprising, touching, and real. A real bargain at a buck (don’t waste a full credit).

Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky is considered one of the greatest Russian writers. His works have had a profound and lasting effect on 20th-century literature. His psychological penetration into the human soul had, in novels like Crime and Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov, a profound influence on the 20th century novel. He also wrote a number of brilliant short stories along these same lines. "The Wedding" is one of his best.

This is a late Tolstoy novella (perhaps his best short) examining one life facing death. The narration is good (not great) and does not get in the way of the text at all. The writing is excellent among the best you will ever read. The story is dark, quite non-religious, and largely existentialist, thus some may find it too depressing. Others may find in the story a powerful illustration of the primary lesson of life; If you waste it, you will regret it. It does this without being the tiniest bit preachy, moralistic, or predictable. At two bucks one of the best values on Audible. If you haven't read any Tolstoy, this is the place to start.

The brilliance of this story is in how a normal bureaucrat, a judge in this case, has a small accident that winds up gradually taking his life. As he deals with this incident, with hope at first and then despair, he comes to terms with his family, his life, and the mediocrities that we all suffer with, except for the exceptional few. This story rings a particularly poignant note for those in early middle age facing the next part of their lives. This story is considered Tolstoy's best.

These are two very good Chekhov short stories with acceptable narration. Both of these are wonderful examples of Chekhov shorts. They both show dramatic character change through internal dialog. The only downside is the narration, which is better than most of the Roberson Audio Publications titles I have listened to, but it is still not great narration. At just 63 cents this was definitely worth it (don’t use a full credit), but these stories deserve a better presentation.

    Story

I am familiar with Jim Butcher and Simon Green, I have read most of what they have written, I enjoyed what they contributed. (not their best, but not their worst either) Kat Richardson's ghost story was interesting and had a real twist, It was good for a 2 1/2 hour listen. Thomas Sniegoski' is new to me, but I found this work very enjoyable and will be looking into checking out some of his other books. If you enjoy urban fantasy, these anthologies are a good way to find new authors. No not every story will knock your socks off but, being fair I have to say I really enjoyed 80% and I didn't hate the other 20%. Wish I could give this 4 1/2 stars.BTW If you have been listening to Jim Butcher "Dresden Files" and Simon Green "Nightside" on Audible, there is a different narrators, still I think they were done well. Nice way to find new authors and narrators.

I thought I'd like at least 50% since I've listened to several anthologies Charlaine Harris (author/editor) has done. I enjoyed each of them. Even though I didn't know a majority of these authors. I was very pleasantly surprised. The stories were true mysteries, with the paranormal twist. I got this on sale and I didn't use a credit, but for what I paid I got lots of hours of listening enjoyment. Thanks Charlaine for pulling off another great anthology.

I like anthologies, gives me a chance to hear new authors, and narrators. Also most of the time the stories are not to long, so if your taking short trips, or just doing some yard work, bases are covered. I found myself enjoying 90% of this and to me that made it worth the buy. Kelley Armstrong, Jim Butcher, Rachel Cain, P N Elrod, Charlaine Harris...........and a few other good surprises.

  • "Superb Collection and Production"

Cannot recommend this one highly enough. All the stories have been excellent. Funny often, witty, everything you could want, with a great mix of authors and narrators- all well matched. Huge scope and variety. These are not ones you'll get necessarily everywhere else but they are perfect as short stories. They really show what the form can do. But without relying on those few short stories you'll have been forced to read in every grade at every school. Head and shoulders above other collections I've tried so far. Even the eras are mixed- older to modern. Congratulations to the compilers, producers, and narrators for really doing justice to great authors! And my thanks.

William Somerset Maugham (1874 - 1965) took his reading material quite seriously. He said, "When I read a book, I seem to read it with my eyes only. But now and then I come across a passage, perhaps only a phrase, which has a meaning for me, and it becomes part of me." Maugham's work has certainly become a part of millions of his fans today. To judge by his short story masterpieces, it was in the tiny crevasses and pinched corners of humanity that Maugham illuminated those elemental qualities that were to fascinate him all his life.

One of the most important and blazingly original writers of his generation, George Saunders is an undisputed master of the short story, and Tenth of December is his most honest, accessible, and moving collection yet. In the taut opener, "Victory Lap", a boy witnesses the attempted abduction of the girl next door and is faced with a harrowing choice: Does he ignore what he sees, or override years of smothering advice from his parents and act? In "Home", a combat-damaged soldier moves back in with his mother and struggles to reconcile the world he left with the one to which he has returned.

"I believe there is another man inside every man, a stranger...." writes Wilfred Leland James in the early pages of the riveting confession that makes up "1922", the first in this pitch-black quartet of mesmerizing tales from Stephen King. For James, that stranger is awakened when his wife, Arlette, proposes selling off the family homestead and moving to Omaha, setting in motion a gruesome train of murder and madness.

    Parusski says: "Eerie, honest, frightening!"

From number-one New York Times best-selling authors Preston & Child, an all-new short story featuring Agent Pendergast, available only as an ebook and audio download. In New Orleans' French Quarter, the Tooth Fairy isn't a benevolent sprite who slips money under your pillow at night.... He's a mysterious old recluse who must be appeased with teeth - lest he extract retribution. When young Diogenes Pendergast loses a tooth, however, his skeptical older brother Aloysius is determined to put the legend to the test...with dire consequences.

Judith says: "Great Pendergast short story, don't use a credit"

Here, in her first collection in eight years, McCorkle collects 11 brand-new stories bristling with her characteristic combination of wit and weight. In honeymoon shoes, mud-covered hunting boots, or glass slippers, all of the women in these stories march to a place of new awareness, in one way or another, transforming their lives. They make mistakes, but they don’t waste time hiding behind them. They move on. They are strong. And they’re funny, even when they are sad.
