First part of the book ( dealing with the brain structure and functionality from a neuromarketing perspective) is a real masterpiece with lots of solid deep insights. The second part though is a pure marketing of the authors patented research and the services they provide in his company. Didn't regret it though.

And one additional thought, the narrator could have been much better.

John's greatest hits:
  • Viral Loop: From Facebook to Twitter, How Today's Smartest Businesses Grow Themselves

    "Misleading Title"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

The title of this book suggests it is about how to set up a viral marketing campaign. In reality, it is a very lengthy history of viral marketing. If viewed in that light, it is somewhat interesting and might merit at least a three star ranking. If you are looking for a "how to" book, this is not the one for you.

The narration by Richard Allen really drags the book down. Yes, I know he has a familiar voice and I know he has been nominated for awards. However, Mr. Allen has an almost comical tendency to mangle words. If Mr. Allen does not know how to pronounce a word (or someone's name), he just mispronounces it and goes on. And he mangles a lot of words. This leads to a really shoddy production value that, to me anyway, is pretty irritating for a premium-priced audiobook.

If the producer had reviewed Mr. Allen's work and had him re-record the mangled parts, it would have greatly helped the audiobook. Apparently, however, no one cared enough to do this.

  • The New Rules of Marketing & PR

"There's a Lot of Good Stuff Here"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

There is a lot of really good information in this book. Very good ideas about how to achieve great marketing results on the Internet. Words of warning: Scott has a tendency to repeat content in his books. You will find repetition in Tuned In and World Wide Rave. Not my favorite narrator; smooth, but a little monotone.

  • The Power in a Link: Open Doors, Close Deals, and Change the Way You Do Business Using LinkedIn

"Useful Information in a Slightly Irritating Book"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

There is some good information in this book about LinkedIn. Even as an experienced LinkedIn user, I learned a lot. That said, the substantive content of this book could be presented in an hour.

The remainder of the book basically consists of the author telling us about how great he is. I have rarely seen an instance of someone so often and loudly patting himself on the back. For instance, I do not know how many times Gowel refers to himself as a "LinkedIn Jedi" (a title bestowed by a Boston technology writer), but it could be turned into a college drinking game. Wouldn't two or maybe three references be enough?

I'm not saying I'm not impressed by Gowel's background. Hey, just tell me (once) you were an Army Ranger and I'm impressed. Tell me (once) that you started a successful tech business and I'm impressed.

Unfortunately, this self-congratulatory approach appears to be gaining traction among Gen Y authors. For me, it is a lot better to show me how good you are than to tell me again and again how good you are. But maybe I'm just an out of touch curmudgeon!

Oh, and about the narration. Sean Pratt is a go-to narrator. I have listened to many books Sean has narrated. He is smooth and polished. However, he sometimes has a tendency to sound like Niles Crane, the foppish younger brother from "Frasier." In this case, this tendency made the content even a bit more irritating.

  • Steal These Ideas: Marketing Secrets That Will Make You a Star

    "Not for the Small Business"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

This book is written by a guy who has done major marketing campaigns for huge companies. He is very "old school" and barely covers the Internet. If you are working for a marketing group in a Fortune 500 company and buying TV and hiring spokespersons, then this might be a good reference. As a reference for a small business, there is not a lot here.

Steve urges the use of professional spokespersons. Too bad he did not hire a professional narrator. Much of the narration is disjointed and unprofessional. He should have followed his own advice.

In an age of Twitter, smartphones, and self-service kiosks, high-tech but still high-touch customer service is the answer. Today’s customers are a hard bunch to crack. Time-strapped, screen-addicted, value-savvy, and socially engaged, their expectations are tougher than ever for a business to keep up with. They are empowered like never before and expect businesses to respect that sense of empowerment - lashing out at those that don’t. Take heart: Old-fashioned customer service, fully retooled for today’s blistering pace and digitally connected reality, is what you need to build the kind of loyal customer base that allows you to survive - and thrive.

Why do some products get more word of mouth than others? Why does some online content go viral? Word of mouth makes products, ideas, and behaviors catch on. It's more influential than advertising and far more effective. Can you create word of mouth for your product or idea? According to Berger, you can. Whether you operate a neighborhood restaurant, a corporation with hundreds of employees, or are running for a local office for the first time, the steps that can help your product or idea become viral are the same.

Why are you captivated by some people but not by others? Why do you recall some brands yet forget the rest? In a distracted, overcrowded world, how do certain leaders, friends, and family members convince you to change your behavior? Answer: fascination, the most powerful way to influence decision-making. It's more persuasive than marketing, advertising, or any other form of communication. And it all starts with seven universal triggers: lust, mystique, alarm, prestige, power, vice, and trust.
