I don’t know why exactly but I absolutely love hearing about the story of Pistol Pete. Maybe it’s just because I am fascinated with the whole child prodigy thing but in any event, I just love this story and could listen to stories about Pistol Pete all day.

With that said, I found that this book takes way too long to get into the story. Slow start. But by the second chapter, this gets great and by the end, it's amazing. I really loved how the author sprinkles in the history of basketball throughout the book and especially enjoyed hearing about Pete’s father and his beginnings as a player and coach. And the last hour about Pete's children is also very good.

Two thumbs up and if I had more hands, I'd give it more thumbs!

Pistol is more than the biography of a ballplayer. It's the stuff of classic novels: the story of a boy transformed by his father's dream and the cost of that dream. Even as Pete Maravich became Pistol Pete, a basketball icon for baby boomers, all the Maraviches paid a price. Now acclaimed author Mark Kriegel has brilliantly captured the saga of an American family: its rise, its apparent ruin, and, finally, its redemption.

I had this book in my wish list for two years and without a doubt, that was a huge mistake. This book was outstanding! Not a huge tennis fan but this is such a great story. I loved hearing about Andre when he was little. I loved hearing about his rise to the tennis ranks and I loved listening to how he remained on top. I even loved hearing about his personal relationships as well. Most impressively, the narrator did a tremendous job and the book is written in such a great way, it made me wonder if Agassi actuallly did write this. If so, he writing ability may be as good as his tennis talents! Two thumbs up and highly recommended!!!

In this often violent but always introspective memoir, Mobb Deep’s Prodigy tells his much-anticipated story of struggle, survival, and hope on the mean streets of New York City. For the first time, he gives an intimate look at his family background, his battles with drugs, his life of crime, his suffering with sickle-cell anemia, and more. Recently released after serving three and a half years in state prison for what many consider an unlawful arrest, Prodigy is ready to talk about his life as one of rap’s greatest legends.

glamazon's greatest hits:
  • Endgame: Bobby Fischer’s Remarkable Rise and Fall—from America’s Brightest Prodigy to the Edge of Madness

    "Overly Factual"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

I thought this book was compelling because of its subject, and it's well written, with logical, linear threads.

But I wanted to read more about Fischer's breakdown, and what led him to withdraw from conventional life. I wanted to see Fisher from the inside. I don't know if that's even possible, or if he ever sought counseling or even knew or cared that his life was in a "move" more baffling than his most challenging chess match.

I'd love to see another writer, or even this one, continue to plunder the depths where "Endgame" leaves off.

  • The Other Great Depression: How I'm Overcoming, on a Daily Basis, at Least a Million Addictions and Disfunctions and Finding a Spiritual (Sometimes) Life

    "Not your average drunkalogue"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

I have been a Richard Lewis fan since I started watching "Curb Your Enthusiasm" on DVD.

This book, read by the author, is an insightful and profound odyssey into the depths of alcoholism and addiction, combined with his spiritual journeys in recovery. There were some excellent sound-bytes and one-liners and I had to keep rewinding in order to memorize them.

I found the delivery a little flat in Part 1 but he warms to his subject and sounds more animated in Part 2. I think the book was originally written some time in the early 2000's, with an "Afterward" from 2007. I couldn't understand why he refers to flight attendants as "stewardesses" unless the outdated term was purposely used in the context of the past.

I'll give this one a "five" as the dominant theme is that chemical sobriety is only a beginning, and that it takes work to stay on the path, while still having fun.

  • Then Again

    "Keaton Needs Chemistry"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

The predominant feature of this memoir is that is it almost entirely without conflict. There is no personal growth through adversity, no "coming of age", no sense of achievement that comes from meeting personal and professional challenges, nor any sense of "is that all there is?". Keaton's bulimia and her mother's Alzheimer's could have been main structural beams on which to hang the stories, but instead these issues are treated as incidental background players.

As a reader of about the same chronological age as Keaton, I remember well the Annie Hall persona and how it affected me at a time in my life where my own persona was not as well defined. How I envied her - the edgy outfits, the life, the blathering comic affect and seeming befuddlement turned into advantage. Things have changed for me, as well as for her. She's now a successful well-known actor but no longer someone I envy, as her looks and style have become mainstream and I have become more like the Annie Hall of the 60's. Sans the comic but clumsy befuddlement, of course.

The main thing that comes across to me in this memoir is not the idolizing of her mother, which actually works quite well as a series of dueling journals, not the odd and preciously stage-worthy names she gives her children, names which really are more appropriate for household pets. It's the fact that Keaton needs the creative charisma of a Woody Allen or a Warren Beatty, or the dark presence of a Jack Nicholson or Al Pacino in order to really shine. By herself she is just an average actor with an average mother who likes to write. And the family life she presents, while enviable in the sense of ease and comfort, is bereft of any kind of conflict or challenge. Her family is overflowing with love and goodness and movie roles fall into her lap, and by herself, Diane is just half of an equation.

Someone once said this about writing: "Want a good story? Part One, put someone in a tree. Part Two, get him out." The trouble with "Then Again" is there's no tree.

  • Wishful Drinking

    "Witty, hilarious listen!"

    Overall

    Story

Just the most ironic, laugh-out-loud, authentic-sounding memoir I've read in a long time. The artist formerly known as Princess Leia lays out rolicking wit similar in flat, deadpan delivery to David Sedaris. Provided in a raspy, too-many-cigarettes voice, Carrie Fisher's narrative of her trip through lala land is a stunner.

    A must listen!

Jimmy Connors took the tennis world by storm like no player in the history of the game. A shaggy-haired working-class kid from the wrong side of the tracks, he was prepared to battle for every point, to shout and scream until he was heard, and he didn't care whom he upset in doing so. He was brash; he was a brat. He was a crowd-pleaser, a revolutionary. And he won more tournaments - an astonishing 109 - than any other man in history, including eight Grand Slam singles titles. Only now is Connors ready to set the record straight on what really happened on and off the court.

Hugh was unclear whether he was being praised, teased, vaguely insulted, or possibly all three - because it has always been very difficult to know how to feel about being British.

Over the course of a year, the members of the now infamous Bling Ring allegedly burglarized some of the biggest names in young Hollywood. Driven by celebrity worship, vanity, and the desire to look and dress like the rich and famous, these seven teenagers made headlines for using Google maps, Facebook, and TMZ to track the comings and goings of their targets. Many of the houses were unlocked. Alarms disabled. A "perfect" crime - celebrities already had so much, why shouldn't the Bling Ring take their share?

Though he was born and raised in Augusta, Georgia, home of fabled Augusta National and The Masters, as a child Tripp Bowden was too young and too removed from the game of golf to realize what Augusta National really was, what it meant to his town and the world and the sport; its history, nostalgia, prestige and secrecy. Acclaimed sportswriter Allen Barra exposes the uncanny parallels - and lifelong friendship - between two of the greatest baseball players ever to take the field. Culturally, Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays were light-years apart. Yet they were nearly the same age and almost the same size, and they came to New York at the same time. They possessed virtually the same talents and played the same position. They were both products of generations of baseball-playing families, for whom the game was the only escape from a lifetime of brutal manual labor.

"The figure looking back at me was little more than a skeleton with just a thin layer of tissue paper for skin, drawn over the stick-like bones. I stood staring for a good couple of minutes, considering what I'd become. And my verdict? Brilliant, I thought. It's been worth every moment of all that hard work". Say the name Nikki Grahame and most people will remember the bubbly, highly strung and hugely entertaining Big Brother 7 contestant.
