  • Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen

"Superb doesn't even do this book justice"

    Story

What a great story. Not only great story, our author is major character and protagonist of and within the story. And herein lies the two major themes that make this one of the best books I have ever read.

    1) Detailed and inside coverage of the Ultra Running Culture. Mexican (Tarahumara) legendary runners, strange (different/better) Americans. With a story how the two groups got together in the hidden mountains of Mexico for an EPIC race.

    2) Detailed debunking of popular myths regarding running (especially useless and debilitating running shoes). As well as technical and deep mental insights of people who run and are addicted to running Ultra races.

Perhaps (I mean why not) I could run a 50 mile ultra. I mean with the help of this book I am now running 20 miles along side the Colorado River (Glenwood Canyon). When I used to groan and moan to run 6.

Finally and again the best story, documentary, training manual, inspiration extended quatrain ever anywhere.

  • Own the Game: Sport Science Training for Peak Athletic Development!

"OMG. Audible - can I get my money back"

    Story

    1) I am (amenities aside) a very good skier
    2) and very interested in the burgeoning breakthroughs in mental training -
especially as it relates to movement skills (read the body has a mind of
    its own.
    3) So took a chance with "Own the Game" ... what a misplaced bet.
The book is an unembarrassed pitch by the author for his line of something.
And it's focus is the Dare to Be Great bs .. e.g., zoning is feeling good
about yourself and down from there. It's presentation is anecdotal and pandering in the worst of the southern California obsession with personal feelings of value. Again, Audible - can I get my money back

  • "Great next step after "Born to ..."

    2 of 2 helpful votes

This is a wonderful book, a very personal account of life and running by Scott Jurek. Having read Born to Run I was keen to know more about what running, and what something as extreme as an ultramarathon meant to those who participated and were passionate. Scott gives an intimate account of what running has brought him, how the physical challenge stretched his mind and touched his soul, this I really appreciated. He also gives plenty of practical information; running tips, training guidance and then his food philosophy and recipes making for a very wholesome read. Highly recommended! The only aspect that I found a little jarring was the narrator, it took me time to adapt to his narration, which at times I found quite aggressive. Having said this it was not a poor performance and just took some getting used to.

Today the New York Yankees are worth more than $1 billion and are once again world champions.

This is a story about young men who learned to play baseball during the 1930s and 1940s, and then went on to play for one of the most exciting major-league ball clubs ever fielded, the team that broke the color barrier with Jackie Robinson. It is a story by and about a sportswriter who grew up near Ebbets Field, and who had the good fortune in the 1950s to cover the Dodgers for the Herald Tribune. This is the story about what happened to the team when their glory days were behind them.

i>Red and Me is an extraordinary book: an homage to a peerless coach, showing how he produced results unlike any other; an inspiring story of mutual success, in which each man gave his all, and gained back even more; above all, it may be the best depiction of male friendship ever put on the page. Who would have guessed that such different men could have become such a tightly bonded pair? Few did guess it. Now Russell tells it.

Though written many years ago, few books have equaled this little volume in explaining how the mind is so important in the game of golf and how psychological control and techniques can improve your game as much, and perhaps more, than improved physical techniques. We've all seen golfers with terrible form who do very well. They have the "mind game" if not the physical grace. For those who can put them both together, the sky's the limit.

A former Augusta National caddie recounts the invaluable life lessons he learned from the late Freddie Bennett, the fabled club's legendary caddie master. Though he was born and raised in Augusta, Georgia, home of fabled Augusta National and The Masters, as a child Tripp Bowden was too young and too removed from the game of golf to realize what Augusta National really was, what it meant to his town and the world and the sport; its history, nostalgia, prestige and secrecy. But all that changed once Bowden's father, a renowned local doctor, introduced him to one of his patients, Freddie Bennett, the legendary Augusta National caddie master.

How else could you explain him spending a full year of his life attending 100 uniquely different sporting events - involving 50 separate sports? Speed-dating with the entire sporting world initially revealed only painful truths, but what he ultimately learned in the most unassuming of venues had a dramatic impact on Tim’s life as a fan, a sports entrepreneur, and - however humble - an athlete.

Two years before they faced each other in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Nationals - the modern-day U.S. Open - two men boarded the Titanic as strangers. Dick, shy and gangly, was moving to America to pursue a tennis career and attend Harvard. Karl, a dashing tennis veteran, was chasing after Helen, the love of his life. An emotional and touching work, this novel brings one of the most extraordinary sports stories to life in literary form. This real-life account - with an ending seemingly plucked out of a Hollywood screenplay - weaves the themes of love, tragedy, history, sport and perseverance.

Acclaimed sportswriter Allen Barra exposes the uncanny parallels - and lifelong friendship - between two of the greatest baseball players ever to take the field. Culturally, Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays were light-years apart. Yet they were nearly the same age and almost the same size, and they came to New York at the same time. They possessed virtually the same talents and played the same position. They were both products of generations of baseball-playing families, for whom the game was the only escape from a lifetime of brutal manual labor.
