I grew up on Golden Age Radio, and while I love to read, I typically consume more books via audio thanks to a job that lets me listen while I work. As an aspiring writer, I try to read a great deal of non-fiction in addition to a variety of fictional genres. I especially love history, historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy, and old-style gothic horror.

Having tried a couple of performances from The Colonial Radio Players, I'm hooked. It's like listening to golden age radio, only without the static and without the commercials. I love that sort of thing, and you can tell these actors have a lot of fun with the performances. Of the titles Audible has, most of their works are historical or adventure stories, but this one stood out as... well, it's Snow White. Fairy tales aren't exactly typical of the lineup available here, so why not try it out?

The story as presented here is really close to the original Grimm version, with a few minor variations here and there, but nothing distracting or even overly noticeable. In the age where it seems like everyone's remaking these old stories on TV or film, it's refreshing to have a more faithful version of the classic for modern ears.

Once upon a time in the middle of winter, when the flakes of snow were falling like feathers from the sky, a queen sat at a window sewing, and the frame of the window was made of black ebony. And whilst she was sewing and looking out of the window at the snow, she pricked her finger with the needle, and three drops of blood fell upon the snow. And the red looked pretty upon the white snow, and she thought to herself, "Would that I had a child as white as snow, as red as blood, and as black as the wood of the window-frame." blood, and as black as the wood of the window-frame." Soon after that she had a little daughter....

The CBS Radio Workshop was an experimental series of productions, subtitled "radio's distinguished series to man's imagination" that ran between 27 January 1956 and 22 September 1957. The premiere production was Brave New World, narrated by Huxley himself, with a complicated sound-effects score that evidently took a long time to construct, and comprised a ticking metronome, tom-tom beats, bubbling water, an air hose, a cow's moo, an oscillator, and three kinds of wine glasses clicking together.

Dragnet was perhaps the most famous and influential police procedural drama in media history. The series gave millions of audience members a feel for the boredom and drudgery, as well as the danger and heroism, of real-life police work.

Actor and producer Jack Webb's aims in Dragnet were for realism and unpretentious acting. He achieved both goals, and Dragnet remains a key influence on subsequent police dramas in many media.

This week on Car Talk, a day of maple sugaring came to a bad end for John when he spilled a five-gallon container of syrup in his car. How can he get the sticky stuff out of the seatbelt holders, short of slipping a stack of pancakes in there to sop it up? Also, a classic Car Talk driveway moment, literally, as Jason pours gas down his truck's carburetor, and tries to start it on the air. Will the 20th time be the charm? And on Stump the Chumps, we find out whether Tom and Ray correctly diagnosed Paula's whistling Bronco. All this, plus Tommy celebrates the arrival of a brand-new jalopy, this week on Car Talk.
