When it comes to audiobooks, literature is okay. Self help, educational and history books are great BUT nothing beats comedy! And overall, this book was super funny. Felt just like I was there at a comedy show. Warning: listening to this by yourself with the head phones on may make you look a little strange as everyone will look at you and wonder what the heck are you laughing at. It gives a new means to LOL!

George Orwell's classic satire of the Russian Revolution is an intimate part of our contemporary culture, quoted so often that we tend to forget who wrote the original words! This must-read is also a must-listen!

  • New Rules: Polite Musings from a Timid Observer

"A hilarious book for fans only"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

I have been a fan of Maher since Politically Incorrect, which by its very name was enough to draw me in. All his wit and sarcasm is here. Some segments had me laughing for minutes afterward, although I didn't like the format. Saying "new rule" before every segment got a little annoying, especially since some were only a sentence or two long.

As usual with our polarized society, anyone who doesn't agree with him won't take the time to listen, so mark this one for fans only. Right wing nuts will stick with Coulter, where facts are rare because they interfere with her rhetoric. Maher takes real news and puts his own spin on it, and ends up bashing everyone about equally -- except for Dubya. If you are a Dubya lover you definitely won't like this book.

  • When You Ride Alone You Ride with bin Laden: What the Government Should Be Telling Us to Help Fight the War on Terrorism

"Witty and accurate, mostly, but outdated"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

I'm a big Maher fan but I found this book mostly a waste of time. Most of his rants he has done before and funnier -- this one is more "serious". However he wrote the book in 2002 and so much of the material is dated. Some of the rants in this book are off topic as well -- what does euthanasia have to do with terrorists?

He does bring up a lot of excellent points. If you need some enlightening as to the decline of Western civilization and the global effects of American gluttony, there are lots here. His wit is sharp as always.

However, while stating that American myopia and blissful ignorance about everything outside her borders infuriates the rest of the world (which it does), he promotes that kind of thinking in his own opinions. As Iraq has shown, the President is not the "leader of the free world" anymore, and the mighty American military can't beat any country in the world into submission simply by attacking it. No country can win a war against a determined population -- the Soviets found that out in Afghanistan. America found that out in Viet Nam. And America hasn't the greatest nation on Earth for 200 years, only for the last 50. Before WW2, America was still a struggling new nation.

He also neglected to mention the contributions other countries made in Afghanistan and even in WW2, continuing the trend of the American media to rewrite history. He also didn't mention that people of many countries lost their lives in 9/11, which made 9/11 an attack on everyone, not just America.

These kinds of hypocrisies disappointed me and detracted from my enjoyment of the book.

  • I'd Rather We Got Casinos

    "Some bits funny, some not"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

I always enjoy Wilmore's spots on The Daily Show. His mild take on racism has some unexpected reversals -- like the title, "I'd rather we got casinos". The bits in this book are in the same vein but most go on too long and lack punch. I would say it's amusing most of the time and funny only some of the time. His delivery is perfect though. He is an excellent narrator.

  • Barrel Fever and Other Stories

    "My first wasted audio credit"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

After reading "Dress Your Family..." and "Me Talk Pretty...", which are both excellent, I was ready for more Sedaris. This is only 3 hours long but I figured it might be some of his live routines, which are usually the funniest. There were none.

It's hard to believe this is written by the same guy. The first 2.5 hours are dull, consisting of a series of stories which are bizarre but not funny at all. They are perhaps meant to be shocking because they were "gay" but I found them boring. I kept wanting to skip forward, but I was waiting for the jokes because sometimes he lets his stories build. I was always disappointed. The last half hour is better but still not up to his other material.

I'm not sure of the chronology of this, but I think it is some of his earliest works, long before he sharpened his wit and perfected his delivery. It feels like early Beatles bootlegs, which no one but die hard collectors would care about. Someone figured he could make a buck by digging up Sedaris' earliest works once he became famous. Save your credit for his more recent stuff.

Marc Maron was a parent-scarred, angst-filled, drug-dabbling, love-starved comedian who dreamed of a simple life: a wife, a home, a sitcom to call his own. But instead he woke up one day to find himself fired from his radio job, surrounded by feral cats, and emotionally and financially annihilated by a divorce from a woman he thought he loved. He tried to heal his broken heart through whatever means he could find - minor-league hoarding, Viagra addiction, accidental racial profiling, cat fancying, flying airplanes with his mind - but nothing seemed to work. It was only when he was stripped down to nothing that he found his way back.

In Dad is Fat, stand-up comedian Jim Gaffigan, who’s best known for his legendary riffs on Hot Pockets, bacon, manatees, and McDonald's, expresses all the joys and horrors of life with five young children - everything from cousins ("celebrities for little kids") to toddlers’ communication skills ("they always sound like they have traveled by horseback for hours to deliver important news"), to the eating habits of four-year-olds ("there is no difference between a four-year-old eating a taco and throwing a taco on the floor").

Master storyteller and satirist Kurt Vonnegut was one of the most in-demand commencement speakers of his time. For each occasion, Vonnegut’s words were unfailingly unique, insightful, and witty, and they stayed with audience members long after graduation. As edited by Dan Wakefield, this book reads like a narrative in the unique voice that made Vonnegut a hero to readers and listeners of all ages. At times hilarious, razor-sharp, freewheeling, and deeply serious, these reflections are ideal for anyone undergoing what Vonnegut would call their "long-delayed puberty ceremony".

If you graduated from college but still feel like a student...if you wear a business suit to job interviews but pajamas to the grocery store...if you have your own apartment but no idea how to cook or clean...it's OK. But it doesn't have to be this way. Just because you don't feel like an adult doesn't mean you can't act like one. And it all begins with this funny, wise, and useful book. Based on Kelly Williams Brown's popular blog, Adulting makes the scary, confusing "real world" approachable, manageable - and even conquerable.
