    Story

Some aspects of this book are great. It is a real discussion of habit, and techniques to change it. The anecdotes get extremely annoying. The author jumps from one story, to another, and then back again. It lacks a summary of the main point of each chapter, which would really help drive things home.

In one chapter I listened to a discussion of brain surgery and a a blow by blow detail of a big surgical error. This story was then displayed as an example of negative habits.

That sounds OK in theory, but it took the author twenty minutes to get to the point. I felt like most of the meaning of the book got buried in the examples, and there was no clarification on the meat of the information.

    It's narrated well.

I have already gotten along better with the new people I am meeting thanks to the guidelines in this book. I'm so very glad I bought it. It's going to be a treasured title in my audio library.

I've already listened to this three times, and I will undoubtedly listen to it again. One of four essential writing guides, and the best of the four. In fact, it's the best one I've ever read.

    Ever.

You may also want "Steal this Plot", "The Power of Point of View" and "Writer's Guide to Character Traits". If you are interested in writing in the romance genre, then "How to Write Romances" by Phyllis T. Pianka is also veryworthwhile.

Unfortunately, that's about it as far as actual techniques and discussion of the craft of writing. Everything else I've seen has been a popular discussion for folks who do not write and who are clueless about the publishing process. If you are a writer who wants to learn how to improve your writing with concrete techniques, this is the book for you.

  • Meditations to Change Your Brain: Rewire Your Neural Pathways to Transform Your Life

    "Interesting"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

I found the content in this book interesting, but confess I didn't finish it. The downside to me was that the mediations are including in the general narration so it made it pretty much impossible to find them again after the fact. It would have liked them to be perhaps a separate chapter on their own.

  • Self-Compassion: Stop Beating Yourself Up and Leave Insecurity Behind

    "Worth Reading"

    Story

I really enjoyed this book and got alot out of it. It would have to be the first self help type book I have read where the author shares her stories thereby clearing making her point about us all being imperfect. I liked how the book contained her thoughts but also research that has been conducted. I would recommend everyone read this book.

  • Switch: How to Change Things When Change Is Hard

    "Excellent Practical Book on Change"

    Overall

    Story

I really enjoyed this book and got a lot out of it both on a personal level and on a professional level. All the things in the book seem to make sense to me and I know look at ways I can adopt their suggestions to help manage change. I nearly didn't buy the book because of all the comments about the poor narration but although he wasn't the best narrator I didn't find it detracted at all from the book. I would definitely recommend reading this book.

  • Women, Food and God: An Unexpected Path to Almost Everything

"Interesting but seemed to lack depth"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

I didn't find alot of useful information in this book. I only finished it two days ago but already I've forgotten most of it. I would have liked some clear steps to follow, maybe at the end of each chapter (yes I know she does outline them in one go). The blurb about the book says "If you suffer about your relationship with food - you eat too much or too little, think about what you will eat constantly or try not to think about it at all - you can be free. Just look down at your plate. The answers are there" If you are expecting the book to tell you how to look at your plate and work out how you are feeling by what's on it, you won't find that here.

  • "Change - Paint-by-the-Numbers"

    24 of 26 helpful votes

Actually, the book tells me things that I have been aware of for - well - ever, but the topic is bundled in such a way that I am seeing change in a different light. Here the listener will get a framework from which change can be made. This is a practical, psychologically sound, pattern changing approach to improving life, work, and what ever you want to approach behaviorally. The book presents six sources of influence on our lives, and then individual chapters detail how those influencers can be manipulated to our advantage. This is a very helpful book. Consider reading it soon - unless you procrastinate and this book will help you once you open volume! The writing is engaging and the reading of Joseph Grenny (the second author) is very good.

A stunning new approach to how individuals can not only change their lives for the better in the workplace, but also their lives away from the office, including (but not limited to) finding ways to improve one's working relationship with others, one's overall health, outlook on life, and so on. For example, why is it that 95% of all diet attempts fail? Why do New Year's Resolutions last no more than a few days? Why can't people with good intentions seem to make consistent and positive strides in the way they want to improve their careers, financial fitness, physical fitness, and so on?

Much of the conventional wisdom the last generation has passed on just doesn't apply like it once did. Coming to church for spiritual sustenance can be like going to a restaurant for meals. It's all prepared for you and served to you by someone else. A far better way to get your spiritual nourishment is to learn how to get the "ingredients" and prepare the "meals" for yourself. In this series, Skip Heitzig and the Calvary pastoral staff teach how to study the Bible on your own and apply it - how to really "feast on the Word" and satisfy the deepest needs of your heart.
