    most people looking at this book have likely read dean karnazes "ultramarathon man" or one of his other books. while dean makes himself sound like a tough guy, he's no match for scott jurek.

    the story of how scott started in the sport, changed his diet, went through a spiritual journey and made it all the way to the top is truly remarkable. if you're a marathoner but looking to up your game or take on a new challenge, this one will really open your mind.

    I picked up this Audible book because I thought I might learn something about living and workiing in a prison. The book turned out to be a memoir of a Jewish Harvard graduate and his two years "behind bars" as a prison librarian. You will, however, learn more about prison life and the lives of prisoners than you would expect from a memoir. So I use the term lightly. That said, this is an informative, entertaining, thoughtful, and often funny description of life behind bars. The writing is crisp and the reading of Dustin Rubin is terrific. The book is worth the time for the character studies alone. Enjoy.

    This is a stimulating biography of a tragic figure. If you came of age during the Fisher era, if you are a Chess player, or if you are just interested in getting into an interesting biography, this book is well worth our time. The book traces Fisher’s childhood including the influence of his mother who lived in Russia and was involved in leftist activity. It details how he became interested in Chess and his mothers influence on that career. The final years of Fisher’s life are related in a thoughtful manner. Every page shows a broken, delusional man seeking to find peace. A most interesting section include the final pages that detail the disposition of Fisher’s assets after his death. That is not to be missed. Frank Brady has done us a great service by bringing this man to life and by shedding light on the era in which he lived. The reading of Ray Porter is excellent.

    Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin have written an outstanding biography in "American Prometheus." It relates the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer from childhood through the Manhattan Project. The book delves into the complexity of this man's personality and motivations. It thoroughly covers his political activism and his professional career. Biography lovers will not be disappointed. The writing is fast paced, the reading is very good, and Oppenheimer comes alive. Perhaps the most valuable contribution the book makes is placing Oppenheimer in political and historic context. The reader learns alot about the era as his life unfolds.

    NOTE: My downloaded copy of the book seemed to be edited. The book is still worth the effort, but short portions were apparently re-recorded and inserted into the audio in places. The warmth of the reader(who was excellent by the way) changes abruptly and then jerks back. The pace changes for very brief periods where insertions are made. The volume abruptly changes and then returns. It was a distraction to my ears at least. Don't miss this book if you have an interest, however, for this reason alone.

I am a voracious reader with fairly eclectic taste. I like both fiction and non-fiction, biography, history and current events. I like well written mysteries and suspense and I love 19th and 20th century classical literature as well as modern fiction. My favorite author is Philip Roth but I also love Trollope, Hardy, Jonathan Franzen, Jane Austen and Edith Wharton. My favorite biographer is Robert Caro.

    Although I did not like every essay as much as I liked the first, I found this audiobook very satisfying and engaging. I didn't expect to want to listen to the whole thing, I just chose it in my ipod as a time filler after finishing another book on my commute home, but it held my attention and invited me back every time I entered the car. After purchasing the audiobook I had read a bad book review and hadn't expected to enjoy the book so much. Jonathan Franzen is an intelligent and thoughtful writer, and a surprisingly good narrator. For those who appreciate biographical essays, this is an enjoyable choice.
