I always thought this magazine was only for intellectuals or snooty high culture types. I was wrong! The articles, for the most part are quite compelling; even when at first glance the subject matter may not appeal to me. The hook is that most of these stories have a uniquely human twist. I've subscribed for two months now and even when I miss a week I make sure to catch up on back issues!

Before downloading Audible's New Yorker sampler, I hadn't actively read the magazine in decades. Oh what I've been missing! The literature, the commentary, the reviews... all so splendidly intelligent and insightful. And all so downright entertaining!

In the editions I've downloaded, I've found the selections to be excellent. I feel as though they're the perfect blend of varied content and tone. The narration is equally laudable. Our reader's voice is pleasant, friendly and clear, with just the right amount of inflection and emphasis to bring the writing to life without intruding upon it.

I've been devouring Fresh Air interviews for almost two years, aside from my audio book downloads and the ever-entertaining "Says You" from NPR. The New Yorker is a great addition to my Audible listening!

FROM STEVE FELDBERG, PROGRAMMING DIRECTOR, AUDIBLE:

If you're like me, there's so much great writing out there that demands to be read, but you just don't have time to read it. That's what makes our audio version of "The New Yorker" so rewarding. Each week, I can listen to at least a half-dozen stories from the most literate magazine on Earth. So far I've heard David Sedaris, Jonathan Franzen, and John Updike, plus other entertaining and informative stuff from the magazine's staff writers. If you're going to spend your commuting time wisely, or you're looking for a more intellectual way of multi-tasking, this is the subscription for you!

As a regular reader of The New Yorker, I was delighted to see that Audible has picked it up. The content of the magazine is always compelling. But I know plenty of people who, like myself, don't get through the paper copy and keep the magazines around for that far-off vacation, prison sentence, or whatever will allow one the time to read all the great stories within.
Naturally, the New Yorker is not complete without the visual content, but this digest really hits the high points. The reader is dispassionate, allowing you to infer the voice of authors and the people they describe. My only complaint is a rather obvious one: David Sedaris's story was not read by Sedaris! Again, the narrator was bland enough to allow me to imagine well the intonations of Sedaris's voice. Like the Times digest, it is just that--a digest.
The Audible version got me to listen to sections that I probably would have flipped through otherwise--fiction, music, movies. And I enjoyed them tremendously.
Overall, I'd say this is easily one of the best subscription programs available. For anyone who loves the New Yorker, try it. For anyone who's never heard of the New Yorker, definitely try it! It's some of the best writing out there, and this is a great way to get acquainted.
