Although of an obvious liberal bias, the New York Times in audio format provides far more information then any radio news programs broadcast in this rural area. The audio quality is poorer then other audible products but the reader does an excellent job of reading.

I absolutely love this service. I commute about 2 hours a day (hour each way). I generally listen to traditional news radio (NPR and commercial) but between the constant fund raising and commercials I was getting annoyed. I had picked up an ipod recently and learned about audible.com soon thereafter. I subscribed immediately and added the NYT. What a fantastic service! Now I get to listen to a paper I didnt have time to read before. I recommend this to anyone who follows the news. Couldn't be happier with this service.

While I used to subscribe to the New York Times, it cost a lot and I seldom had the time to read much of it anyway. The Audible.com version is just what the doctor ordered: the headline stories in each important section are read, and that's the important stuff. If you're a news junkie like me, you will want to go online for the full stories and other features, and supplement your news with the usual sources. I personally couldn't care less about the sports news, but I just click to the next section to bypass that portion. The narration is just right -- crisp and clean, not too slow, and with a basic introduction to each news story. Highly recommended, and one of the main reasons I subscribed to Audible.

The paper is on your computer doorstep at 6AM every weekday morning and you don't have to go out in the cold to get it. They review the top stories in each category and the opinion pages at the end. (Tom Friedman we love you) The entire story is not there, but enough to give you the important info and if you want the full story just go on line to get it later in the day. I download it with my Apple iPod and listen to it while eating breakfast and on the drive to work. I bought a subscription that includes a book and a periodical and found it well worth the money. The down side is, it is geared for the newspaper and not a talk format like NPRs "Morning Edition". However, "Morning Edition" is not up and running at 6AM and you have to wait until later in the day to get it. I find that the highest quality is the best for my iPod. I use a cassette adaptor in the car. This may not be worth the money free standing, but as a package: excellent.

These excerpts provide a series of articles from the New York Times totalling about 40 minutes each. The reader has a very pleasant voice, so even though I thought it might be hard to listen to a newspaper, I find this is excellently done. There are selections from the front page, the national page, the sports and finally some readings from columnists. Fortunately the sports section is not that terribly long, so I listen through it though I would rather have other things to listen to. It's a great way to catch up on the news on my daily bicycle commute.
