Why we think it's Essential: Isaacson is the modern master of the biography, so it was only natural that he turn his pen to Einstein. And more than any biography of the past, Isaacson's account unravels the life behind the brain and provides a full picture of the man who embodied the scientific spirit of the 20th century. Edward Herrmann is stirring and moves effortlessly from humorous anecdotes to scientific theories. —Chris Doheny

Publisher's Summary

How did Einstein's mind work? What made him a genius? Isaacson's biography shows how his scientific imagination sprang from the rebellious nature of his personality. His fascinating story is a testament to the connection between creativity and freedom.

Based on the newly released personal letters of Albert Einstein, Walter Isaacson explores how an imaginative, impertinent patent clerk, a struggling father in a difficult marriage who couldn't get a teaching job or a doctorate, became the mind reader of the creator of the cosmos, the locksmith of the mysteries of the atom and the universe. His success came from questioning conventional wisdom and marveling at mysteries that struck others as mundane. This led him to embrace a morality and politics based on respect for free minds, free spirits, and free individuals.

These traits are just as vital for this new century of globalization, in which our success will depend on our creativity, as they were for the beginning of the last century, when Einstein helped usher in the modern age.

It's all relative: listen to more about Albert Einstein.

What the Critics Say

  • Audie Award Winner, Biography/Memoir, 2008

"[A] lucid account." (Publishers Weekly)
"Isaacson has admirably succeeded in weaving together the complex threads of Einstein's personal and scientific life to paint a superb portrait." (Arthur I. Miller, author of Einstein, Picasso)
"Isaacson has written a crisp, engaging, and refreshing biography, one that beautifully masters the historical literature and offers many new insights into Einstein's work and life." (Diana Kormos Buchwald, General Editor of the Collected Papers of Albert Einstein)

From AudioFile

Edward Herrmann narrates the most complete biography of Einstein to date with his trademark thoughtful pacing and clarity. Isaacson's biography is equally thoughtful, offering a well-balanced portrayal of several facets of Einstein's life. As a theoretical physicist, Einstein has been so thoroughly chronicled that new insights are rare. Isaacson, however, offers new personal information and gives more attention to Einstein as a public figure than have previous biographies. The results, aided by Herrmann, who reads in a pleasant, straightforward manner, are fascinating. Herrmann sounds utterly engaged by Einstein. Listeners, too, will succumb. Very interesting to know details about the life of such a man, so detached from the opinions of others, trusting and following his own intuitions till the end of his days; and at the same time always gentle. There are also lots of amusing stories and anecdotes; I enjoyed the listening. I rate four stars because I missed some more about his relationship with the spiritual realm, with God (the well-known "God does not play dice" and little more).

Fascinating history of a fascinating personality. Use of quotes enhanced the authenticity. Some personal opinion appears in the book, but it is always based upon significant documentation. Author is careful to identify events that are probably fiction. While heavy into science, the author provides interesting accounts that proving insights into the personality of Einstein.

WOW the amount of information the world has collected about his life is astounding. Einstein (the person) is no longer an abstract concept, he's a slighty crazy genius who had a mind bogglingly complex life. I understand him in a much different light. Though it is a bit long, I had to use the SleepyTunes iPhone app to help me get through it at night :-)

A great listen, I have already recommended this book to several people. In fact, I was so moved that I need to read the book as well.

We have heard stories about Einstein, unfortunately these stories are tales and legends or simple not true.

Einstein is a deep man, some one I would have like to have known. There is so much I did not know about him, such as his defense of Civil Rights in the USA. To his way with women.

As well, I chose this book because of my love of physics and it did not disappoint.

Get it, you will love it, the only disappointment will be when it comes to an end, 21 hours never went by so quickly!
