Publisher's Summary

In this powerful, epic biography, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David McCullough unfolds the adventurous life-journey of John Adams, the brilliant, fiercely independent, often irascible, always honest Yankee patriot who spared nothing in his zeal for the American Revolution. Adams thought, wrote, and spoke out for the "Great Cause" come what might; he traveled far and wide in all seasons and often at extreme risk; he rose to become the second president of the United States and saved the country from blundering into an unnecessary war; he was rightly celebrated for his integrity, and regarded by some as "out of his senses"; and his marriage to the wise and valiant Abigail Adams is one of the most moving love stories in American history.

Much about Adams' life will come as a surprise to many. His rocky relationship with friend and eventual archrival Thomas Jefferson, his courageous voyage on the frigate Boston in the winter of 1778, and his later trek over the Pyrenees are exploits few would have dared and that few listeners will ever forget.

McCullough's John Adams has the sweep and vitality of a great novel. This is history on a grand scale, an audiobook about politics, war, and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship, and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Above all, it is an enthralling, often surprising story of one of the most important and fascinating Americans who ever lived.

From AudioFile

This book is a veritable feast for anyone interested in good history. McCullough has written a wonderful book on a person who, oddly enough, has not been the subject of a readable biography. Narrator Nelson Runger brings all of his tools to this job. He's authoritative, clear, concise and, as usual, easy to follow. Runger has a no-nonsense voice that suits the project very well, and his phrasing allows us to follow this comprehensive story. The latter is an especially important point because McCullough has divided the book into chapters, which are then divided into sections. Runger has to stop often, announce a new section, pause, and move on. With a less talented reader this might be cause for concern. With Runger, it's just another day at the office. 2002 Audie Award Finalist (c) AudioFile 2002

I gave up and read the book instead - which is excellent. The narrator sounds as if he has false teeth, and suffers from breathing problems and dry mouth. The long pauses, continuous smacks, and noisy breaths were very distracting.

I was so entranced by the first 2 episodes of the HBO miniseries that I knew the book had to be even better. WRONG! The miniseries goes to the meat of the story, leaving the remaining 20 hours on the cutting room floor - where they belong. John Adams was not a great man, just a regular citizen who made great contributions to his country. He did like to hear himself talk and was narcissistic enough to think that everything he thought of or talked about was worth writing down. The author took advantage of the voluminous amount of written material left by the Adams family to try to make their lives worthy of the buckets of ink they went through. Even the narrator sounds like HE'S bored to death! This book is certainly not worth 2 credits or the "member's price" of $49. Don't get sucked in by the hype just because this is featured on HBO. If you got it for the promo price of 1 credit, consider yourself lucky. I urged you to watch it now on HBO, catching up on aired episodes via On Demand, or wait for the repeats. Actors Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney really breathe life into the roles of John and Abigail Adams. Finally, I was very offended by David McCullough's cavalier treatment about the news of Thomas Jefferson and his slave, Sally Hemings. With all of the documents at the author's disposal, I'd like to know what John and Abigail, both overtly anti-slavery throughout their lives, thought about a US President and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence being outed as a child molester and rapist, who never even freed his "baby mama".

Listening to American history from David McCullough's perspective is like hearing it from ones grandfather or trusted friend. I often find myself sitting in my car in the garage for long periods of time - after I have arrived home, not wanting to "put the book down". As far as I am concerned DM is the finest American historian of our age! Fair and without agenda this is the way it is supposed to be written.

I'd never found John Adams to be a very interesting figure, and bought this book purely on the strength of McCollough's '1776'.

I had no idea how deeply engrossing the story of John Adams' life would be, nor how adeptly McCollough would manage to tell it. This is a shockingly thorough work of tested, evidence-based history, objectively presented.

I can't say enough to recommend this book to anybody interested in understanding the multi-dimensional political and diplomatic drama running in parallel to the military drama of the American Revolution, as well as the often awkward foundations of our two party system; all told through the life of an unusually likable and relateable man (as well as his remarkable wife and son).

Quite simply, this was the most fascinating history I have ever read. I am grateful to David McCullough for his meticulous research and masterful writing. He has allowed me to personally know two of the nation's finest and most noble citizens, John and Abigail Adams.

I am also grateful to the narrator, Nelson Runger, whose voice fit the subject matter perfectly. It is clear he knew the book, the times and the characters inside and out.

"John Adams" is now on my ipod, my iphone and on my Kindle; it goes where I go and I intend to listen to it again and again.
