For decades, Peter F. Drucker was widely regarded as "the dean of this country's business and management philosophers" ( Wall Street Journal). In this concise and brilliant work, he looks to the most influential position in management - the executive. The measure of the executive, Drucker reminds us, is the ability to "get the right things done". This usually involves doing what other people have overlooked as well as avoiding what is unproductive.

Story
We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

While the greatest philosophers have pondered purpose for centuries, today it has been shown to have a concrete impact on our health.

Everyone knows that timing is everything. But we don't know much about timing itself. Our lives are a never-ending stream of "when" decisions: when to start a business, schedule a class, get serious about a person. Yet we make those decisions based on intuition and guesswork. Timing, it's often assumed, is an art. In When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing, Pink shows that timing is really a science.

Who is currently running your life? The answer—mostly unbeknownst to us—is that none of us operates from a single self. Instead, we unconsciously move between different personas or defender selves, formed in childhood to help protect us from perceived threats that tell us we’re not good enough. In many cases, the defender serves a useful purpose, but it can also be defensive and highly reactive to any experience of criticism. The Reckoning is a journey of awakening designed to surface the beliefs, habits, biases, fears, and rationalizations of our defenders that prevent us from being our best.

Overall it was very helpful and served as a wake up to parts in my life. The authors did a great job narrating their stories. I typically skim stories in business books looking just for insights or the big takeaway but their examples listening were engaging and supported what they wanted to resonate with the reader/listener. I am eager to look at their online content to further my own development around mind, body, and soul. I would recommend James Altucher's book Choose Yourself with this book.
