Publisher's Summary

Born mute, speaking only in sign, Edgar Sawtelle leads an idyllic life with his parents and an unusual breed of dogs on their farm in remote northern Wisconsin. From AudioFile

Richard Poe's cadenced full-throated performance lets us savor the language in this exquisite first novel about the Sawtelles, a family that slaved for generations to create a breed of super dogs. The point of view jumps from man to dog to baby, and Poe alters his tone tellingly at each transition. Edgar, the desperately awaited only child, is born mute. We first spot his "delicate pink hand" through the eyes of Almondine, the dog that will be his protector and beloved sibling. Enter the dread uncle. When Edgar's father dies mysteriously, Claude seeks to replace him on the farm--and in his mother's affections. After confronting his uncle and accidentally taking a life, Edgar is forced into exile in the woods with three of the special dogs. Poe's voice swells with passion, but he never, ever overplays a line. (c) AudioFile 2008

I really didn't like the ending. I really didn't like it at all but kept listening because I wanted to know the ending, what a mistake. Should have just stopped.

I am sitting and lisening to a news story about a Golden Retriever that just saved his young owner from a cougar, and it prompted me to write this review. This book is a great read. It could have been my all-time favorite book. I have read (listened to it) twice, and found it hard to put down. It is written beautifully. I have raised and trained dogs my whole life, so I appreciated the descriptions of the breeding/training kennel. I could envision the very special "Sawtelle" dogs. The characters of Edgar and his family were intriguing. However, I feel like David Wroblewski made a big mistake when he moulded his story fit into a story that Shakespear already told. The end was unbelievable to me and could have been so much better. The whole story points to the greatness and specialness of the "Sawtell" dogs due their meticulous breeding and training. They were destined to do great things. David Wroblewski sold the dogs short in the end and left me shaking my head.

The prose is wonderful - I found myself filled with the emotion of the main character & the story line - but the ending was horrible - empty - unsatisfying and without closure. Maybe I am old fashioned and want a definitive ending to the books I read - but this was ridiculous! It trailed off into a black hole. I am sorry I spent so much time absorbing this book.
