What the Critics Say

"Humorous Southern-fried fantasy with biting satirical commentary....Harris juggles a large cast...with effortless exuberance." (Publishers Weekly)

From AudioFile

Johanna Parker's perky narration is perfectly suited to Harris's heroine, Sookie Stackhouse, a bubbly, telepathic barmaid, and her world of vampires, fairies, and other supernaturals. Parker empathetically portrays the large cast of characters, including Sookie's boyfriend, weretiger Quinn; her fellow telepath, Barry Bellboy; the vampire queen of LA; and her roommate, Amelia. Sookie starts sleuthing at a vampire conference on the shores of Lake Michigan when vampires start dying. Parker's splendid pacing allows listeners time to absorb the action and emotions. Between the plot twists, romantic entanglements, and biting satirical commentary, listeners will be enthralled. (c) AudioFile 2007

I started out as a fan of True Blood and then started reading the books. The first few were good, but I wasn't sure they'd hold my interest. They really started to grow on me as the characters developed and kept coming back time and time again. This one is my favorite so far - but you have to read them in order to get it! Don't skip, it's worth the wait! There were times I worried about Sookie while I was away from my audio - feeling like I left her stranded because I couldn't hear what happened next! That's what I love in an audio book. I can't wait to drive home and hear more.

I love all the Sookie Stackhouse series but this is my favorite book with all the action, adventure and insight into Sookie's world including her men. I only listen to the series through audible.com because the narrator is so good I can't imagine just reading any of the series instead of listening.

The is my favorite book so far in the series. I am unsure how the author keeps coming up with new magical beings, but she does. Of course, you need to read all the books in order to appreciate the supernatural realm. I wonder if we fully know what exactly Sookie is so far. I rate this tale 4 1/2 stars since I can easily see each keeps getting better.

The narrator's imitations of male voices is annoying. The story line is virtually all dialogue with no character development. If you just like reading about vampires and other creatures without regard to story development, this book is for you.
