Publisher's Summary

In this lyrical, unsentimental, and compelling memoir, the son of a black African father and a white American mother searches for a workable meaning to his life as a black American. It begins in New York, where Barack Obama learns that his father, a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man, has been killed in a car accident. This sudden death inspires an emotional odyssey; first to a small town in Kansas, from which he retraces the migration of his mother's family to Hawaii, and then to Kenya, where he meets the African side of his family, confronts the bitter truth of his father's life, and at last reconciles his divided inheritance.

Hearing the life story of this man, written before he became President is fascinating. Obama reads it extremely well. It gives insight in the forces that shape the man and will shape our times.

exactly what I think of the book. I am almost compelled to get the unabridged hard copy to see what was taken out for the audio. He definitely comes off as a philosophical thinker (or maybe just writer). I still hit several parts in the book where I would think "what did he say?". I would have to say that it was fiction based on fact. No one could remember the details so vividly and verbatim as the book would lead you to believe unless he kept a journal, which may have. It did give some insight into the person, or at least what person he wants to be. I can see from where his political ideas on the world originate. It kept my attention, which after listening to it amazed me because it is about a life that is not much different than most....just more traveling. His recent reaction to the arrest of his professor friend was not what I thought would have happened based on this writing. But then we all put our foot in our mouth at times. Worth the read.

I have always had a high regard for President Obama and his wonderfully articulate and thoughtful writing. Hearing him read 'Dreams from my father' his own words has only served to increase my admiration for him as a passionate human being who recognises the influences of his past and builds on them for the common good in the present and looking forward to a better future.

His highly descriptive recollections of his first meetings with family members in Kenya was particularly poignant, made even more so by hearing it from his mouth.
