Publisher's Summary

"The dead don't talk. I don't know why." But they do try to communicate, with a short-order cook in a small desert town serving as their reluctant confidant. Odd Thomas thinks of himself as an ordinary guy, if possessed of a certain measure of talent at the Pico Mundo Grill and rapturously in love with the most beautiful girl in the world, Stormy Llewellyn.

Maybe he has a gift, maybe it's a curse, Odd has never been sure, but he tries to do his best by the silent souls who seek him out. Sometimes they want justice, and Odd's otherworldly tips to Pico Mundo's sympathetic police chief, Wyatt Porter, can solve a crime. Occasionally they can prevent one. But this time it's different.

A mysterious man comes to town with a voracious appetite, a filing cabinet stuffed with information on the world's worst killers, and a pack of hyena-like shades following him wherever he goes. Who the man is and what he wants, not even Odd's deceased informants can tell him. His most ominous clue is a page ripped from a day-by-day calendar for August 15.

Today is August 14.

In less than twenty-four hours, Pico Mundo will awaken to a day of catastrophe. As evil coils under the searing desert sun, Odd travels through the shifting prisms of his world, struggling to avert a looming cataclysm with the aid of his soul mate and an unlikely community of allies that includes the King of Rock 'n' Roll. His account of two shattering days when past and present, fate and destiny converge is the stuff of our worst nightmares, and a testament by which to live: sanely if not safely, with courage, humor, and a full heart that even in the darkness must persevere.

What the Critics Say

"Once in a very great while, an author does everything right, as Koontz has in this marvelous novel....This is Koontz working at his pinnacle." (Publishers Weekly)
"A curious mixture of whimsy, gentle humor, and horror...It is the casual weirdness on display here, rife with bodachs and other signs of a Vonnegut-style fancifulness, that gives Odd Thomas its principal appeal." (The New York Times)
"This quirky and touching story of a 20-year-old short order cook with paranormal abilities is spun with stylistic grace by Dean Koontz, and read in an innocent, unaffected style by David Aaron Baker." (AudioFile)

From AudioFile

First name Odd, last name Thomas. This quirky and touching story of a 20-year-old short-order cook with paranormal abilities is spun with stylistic grace by Dean Koontz, and read in an innocent, unaffected style by David Aaron Baker. The plot is clean and simple, as is the recording quality, yet Odd's bewitching world becomes more and more engrossing. Baker maintains Odd's quiet passion and integrity while death, violence, and heartbreak hover around him. As you listen, you will visualize the everyday people this psychic loves as clearly as he can, and with similar compassion. (c) AudioFile 2004

Basically, this book actually made me take my time to let others know what I thought. This alone should give you pause, because this is my first review ever.

The book is first. Wow. Characters have 3-D development, which I find lacking in Koontz's other works of fiction. The idea and concept isn't new, but isn't bad. Actually, it works in favor of Koontz's writing style. Throughout the book, I liked the characters, the action, and the slow parts. I hated the ending, not because it was bad, but because it was over. I want more Odd, and I'm not ashamed.

Second, the narrator's voice was very listenable. I have not listened to many audiobooks, but I do believe Baker to be extraordinarily well-spoken.

I hope this helps.

This story was very exciting, well written and nicely unpredictable. The Narrator did a very good job with voices. It was easy to stop hearing him and just imagine the characters.

Quirky and different, with an interesting story and a few surprises along the way. Great narrator too; I'd definitely recommend it!

I'm planning to try the next book in the series (read by the same author.)

Odd Thomas is a character you care about. His Pico Mundo friends are people that you can identify with, and Koontz weaves a story better than anything on tv or at the movies. A very cool story with an ending that makes you want to read or download Forever Odd immediately.
