Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential: Inkheart is a magical book about the power of stories, so it's especially appropriate to hear it read by a magical storyteller: Lynn Redgrave. She has a way of wrapping her voice around words that is just riveting. Almost too riveting - if you listen while driving, be sure not to lose yourself in the performance and forget about the road. —Steve Feldberg

Publisher's Summary

Imagine it were possible to bring the characters from a book to life. Not like when you listen to an audiobook with such enchantment that the characters seem to jump off the pages and into your bedroom...but for real. Imagine they could actually climb out of the pages and into our world.

Then imagine if those characters brought their world into ours.

This is the story of young Meggie, who lives a quiet life alone with her father Mo, a bookbinder, until one cruel night when Mo reads aloud from Inkheart, and an evil ruler named Capricorn escapes the boundaries of fiction and lands in their living room. Suddenly, Meggie is smack in the middle of the kind of adventure she has only read about in books.

Somehow, Meggie and Mo must learn to harness the magic that conjured up this nightmare. Somehow they must change the course of the story that has changed their lives forever.

This is Inkheart, a timeless tale about books, about imagination, about life.

Don't miss Inkspell, the sequel to Inkheart.

I found Inkheart a pleasure to the ears, an original concept and a story that will strike a chord with book lovers. My 7 year old daughter found the dark characters a bit too dark and I did find myself at times getting frustrated at how little was being done to sort the bad guys out.

As a middle school teacher I am exposed to a lot of YA literature, some of which I really enjoy. This book, however, was not one of them. There was a lot of superficial violence which I suppose was to try and build suspense but, really, the book just kept dragging on. Eventually, I just gave up and stopped listening.

Engaging story that I would recommend to anyone who needs a break from The History of Rome part one to many. The story progresses in well written prose without the suspension of disbelief being overly taxed. The good characters are quite sympathetic while the bad ones are quite despicable.

Linn Redgrave's narration is exceptional. Her voices are easily identifiable with each character and consistent throughout. I thought her good enough to look for other titles with her which are surprisingly few.

Pretty good story, a little drawn out. Characters are interesting, and lots of excitement, but not as good as I hoped over all.

This book just developed too slowly for me. There was too many details that drew the story out, distracted from the plot and honestly bored me. I am a "cut to the chase" girl so describing a flower beyond its name is just unnecessary. But if you like the author to make you taste, smell, and feel every detail, give this one a try.
