Publisher's Summary

Carmen got the jeans at a thrift shop. They didn't look all that great; they were worn, dirty, and speckled with bleach. On the night before she and her friends part for the summer, Carmen decides to toss them. But Tibby says they're great. She'd love to have them. Lena and Bridget also think they're fabulous. Lena decides they should all try them on. Whoever they fit best will get them. Nobody knows why, but the pants fit everyone perfectly. Over a few bags of cheese puffs they decide to form a sisterhood, and take the vow of The Sisterhood of Traveling Pants. The next morning, they say good-bye. And now the journey of the pants, and the most memorable summer of their lives begins.

Spend another summer with the girls of the Sisterhood.

From AudioFile

Care, in the finest sense of the word, comes repeatedly to mind in regards to THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS. Ann Brashares has crafted a compassionate, insightful, and lightly humored glimpse into the minds and actions of teenaged girls. The four friends themselves cherish their lifelong relationship. Literally and symbolically, they care for a pair of jeans from a secondhand store as they send the pants, and the rules for wearing them, to each girl over the course of one summer. Angela Goethals's precision and crispness frame each personality as she wears the pants. Her narration is joyful and alive with nuance. As the listener, you will care deeply for the personal growth and developing humanity of these engaging young women. (c) AudioFile 2002

I read all four "traveling pants" books and enjoyed them all. I am a 50 year old female. I doubt that men would enjoy these stories, but even at my age, the author did a brilliant job of reminding the older female reader of what it was like to be a teenager. She captured the joys and sorrows of these years, the excitement of first love, the tough decisions, the issues every teenager has with parents... all-in-all a wonderful journey of a girl's coming of age. She also brought something special to the character development of each girl, and gave them all qualities that would resonate with any woman, young or old. Great narration, and excellent writing, I would highly recommend all four of these books.

I would have never considered reading this book, but it was actually part of a grad. class assignment. Do not discount this book, or series, because it's for young adults. You will fall in love with these characters. You will feel their joy and their sorrow. If you are a teen you will relate...if you are an adult you will remember.

This is a light listen, but certainly not a fluffy book to discount. I empathized for these teenage girls as they embarked on their own personal adventures and was greatly moved by some of the more poignant story lines. I would highly recommend this book, especially for a female teenager or anyone who wants to revisit those rollercoaster years. There are some harder issues that the author handles with care and leaves you to imagine what is going on without having to be explicit. I thought this book was much better than the movie as certain characters in the movie were overly simplified. Angela Goethals narrated brilliantly.
