Publisher's Summary

Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36. They were married when Clare was 23 and Henry was 31. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

Clare and Henry's story unfolds from both points of view, depicting the effects of time travel on their marriage and their passionate love for each other. They attempt to live normal lives, pursuing familiar goals: steady jobs, good friends, children of their own. All of this is threatened by something they can neither prevent nor control, making their story intensely moving and entirely unforgettable.

What the Critics Say

  • Alex Award Winner, 2004

"Highly original first novel....Niffenegger has written a soaring love story illuminated by dozens of finely observed details and scenes....It is a fair tribute to her skill and sensibility to say that the book leaves a reader with the impression of life's riches and strangeness rather than of easy thrills." I think it was probably really good but it was my first so I cant be sure yet. The biggest thing I didnt like about this book was the woman reader when she did male voices. She used an extremely monotone voice for the men. When Henry tells Clair he loves her it should have some emotion behind it. Not a fake drone. It was annoying.

Very creative and very well done. A wonderful love story with a fantastic story line. Equally appealing to readers of both sexes.

This book feels like it was designed to be listened to! While not truly SciFi, the time travel in this book makes a well written relationship book incredibly accessible to the man in the car, while your wife hears a love story with a few extra quirks.

This is one of those rare books we listened to together where neither of us felt like we would rather be listening to anything else! We talked about it for hours.

An excellent, enjoyable, well paced listen!

I'm so sensitive to the narration in Audio books and I'm always skeptical - both Mr. Hope and Ms. Lefkow narrated this story beautifully. What initially sounded like a hokey story line was so expertly spun into an enjoyable read. By nature of the story there are hops around in time, pay attention to the "Henry is 42; Claire is 18" headers at the beginning of each chapter. There is a certain amount of willing suspension of disbelief, but it's worth it.

I enjoyed this book very, very much. I enjoyed the twist on fate the author gave me. I think the narrators did a great job. I really enjoyed them. Laurel Lefkow did an especially good job when narrating Clare through the years of her life changing her voice "attitude" to fit that of the age of Clare.
