Publisher's Summary

Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was 36. They were married when Clare was 23 and Henry was 31. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future. His disappearances are spontaneous, his experiences unpredictable, alternately harrowing and amusing.

Clare and Henry's story unfolds from both points of view, depicting the effects of time travel on their marriage and their passionate love for each other. They attempt to live normal lives, pursuing familiar goals: steady jobs, good friends, children of their own. All of this is threatened by something they can neither prevent nor control, making their story intensely moving and entirely unforgettable.

What the Critics Say

  • Alex Award Winner, 2004

"Highly original first novel....Niffenegger has written a soaring love story illuminated by dozens of finely observed details and scenes....It is a fair tribute to her skill and sensibility to say that the book leaves a reader with the impression of life's riches and strangeness rather than of easy thrills." Very entertaining book. I liked the jumping back and forth in time and the different readers. Both were perfect for their parts. Bit of a tear-jerker here and there, but that is ok. I really didn't want it to end.

The premise of this book is so unique that I really wanted to like it. It also came highly recommended and being 14 to 15 hours long, it would keep me busy killing my 2 hours/day commute. But, I just never really connected with the book. The more I listened, the more I had to felt to finish it to justify the time I had already invested. It went on and on and just felt like something to endure. My first problem with the book is --SPOILER HERE-- with regard to how relationships are treated. Clare saves herself for Henry to give up her virginity to him, how realistic is this? The message that that love will conquer is naive. Lastly, it seems to endorse the traditional female role of being the one who stays at home while the man is off traveling and having adventures. The 2nd problem I had with the book relates to the science of time travel. As a method of evolution toward a better species, the disease should not kill the host. I do not believe that you could time travel without the ability to change the outcome of events. And, it does not explain why he was not constantly running into himself if stress were the trigger. And, I do not believe that he did not run into anyone else like himself. The final problem is with the fact that he was able to keep the disease under wraps. In our paparazzi crazed culture, that was the last unbelievable straw. This was a huge waste of time and I hope to save anyone else from the same fate as I just suffered.

I loved the story, the narration, all of it. Both narrators were great to listen to. And the story itself was very innovative.

Not only is this a great book but the narration, especially the dual naraation style, makes it an astonishing book to listen too. And what an ending.
