Publisher's Summary

Christopher Moore, much beloved scrivener and peerless literary jester, now takes on no less than the legendary Bard himself (with the utmost humility and respect) with a twisted and insanely funny tale of a moronic monarch and his deceitful daughters, as seen through the eyes of a man wearing a codpiece and bells on his head.

Pocket has been Lear's cherished fool for years. So naturally Pocket is at his brainless, elderly liege's side when Lear demands that his kids swear to him their undying love and devotion. Of course Goneril and Regan are only too happy to brownnose Dad. But Cordelia believes that her father's request is kind of...well...stupid, and her blunt honesty ends up costing her her rightful share of the kingdom and earns her a banishment to boot.

Well now the bangers and mash have really hit the fan. And the only person who can possibly make things right . . . is Pocket. Now he's going to have do some very fancy maneuvering: cast some spells, start a war or two - the usual stuff - to get Cordelia back into Daddy Lear's good graces, to derail the fiendish power plays of Cordelia's twisted sisters, and to shag every lusciously shaggable wench who's amenable to shagging along the way.

Pocket may be a fool...but he's definitely not an idiot.

From AudioFile

Multimedia entertainer Euan Morton's energetic narrating talents are on full display as he conjures an amazing array of voices in Moore's raunchy reboot of Shakespeare's KING LEAR. Working with more than a dozen characters, Morton individualizes each to his or her utmost potential. He adorns Moore's foul-mouthed and conniving medieval players with his native Scots brogue and aptly provides equal vocal theatrics. The year is 1288, and murder and conspiracy abound in Lear's court. Pocket, the king's snarky court jester, sets out to solve this expletive-laden mystery and encounters many of Shakespeare's famous foils--updated with modern eccentricities. Moore is infamous for tackling "untouchable" subjects with biting humor, and Morton's whip-smart tongue doesn't waste a line. (c) AudioFile 2009

Having never read this author, didn't realize what I was in for....juvenile, bathroom, masturbatory, crude and vulgar humor. A story that never gained traction, and 'every other sentence' gratuitously vulgar references. Got tired of the characters talking about the size of their ****, and how often they ****, and what chambermaid has the biggest *****.......
This would be a great read for junior high boys.
The narrator was good but I was looking for a 'King Lear' style story..the style was, the story not even...!

Never could get into 'the Bards' work, I can now. Truly hope that Chris Moore 'translates all the Shakespearian greats AND get Euan Morton to narrate. The characters were so vivid, the accents top notch. You can really see the play unfolding. In a word BRILLIANT

At the start my initial thought was that this will have to pick up if I am going to finish it. It did. If you are not a fan of "Search for the Holy Grail" or some of the other Python renderings, then this mode of humor is not for you. Many chuckles and few loud laughs await if you are.

I'm on a Christopher Moore kick lately, having listened to and enjoyed Practical Demonkeeping, A Dirty Job and The Island of the Sequined Love Nun in the past couple of months.

Fool is, different. Different in tone. Different in character development. Different in style.

That's fine for what it is, and Fool was enjoyable, mostly, but if I'd bought it first, I probably wouldn't have continued through Moore's stuff.

I have to wonder if I made it through this book only because I'd read King Lear in the past couple of years. A friend of mine who's never read Lear, gave up because he tired of feeling lost.
I'm not giving up on Moore, though. "You Suck" is being downloaded as I write this.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend this audiobook.

Again, I find myself thoroughly enjoying a Christopher Moore book. Funny, witty, and well read. A great choice, especially for fans of Shakespeare. I am tempted to buy for my 14 year old, who will soon be struggling through Shakespeare. Great stuff!
