Publisher's Summary

Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn't live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead.

There are dangers and adventures in the graveyard for a boy. But if Bod leaves the graveyard, then he will come under attack from the man Jack - who has already killed Bod's family.

Beloved master storyteller Neil Gaiman returns with a luminous new novel for the audience that embraced his New York Times best-selling modern classic Coraline. Magical, terrifying, and filled with breathtaking adventures, The Graveyard Book is sure to enthrall readers of all ages.

What the Critics Say

Newbery Medal winner, 2009

From AudioFile

Neil Gaiman is one of the true gems in the audio industry. He's a great writer who not only reads his own work well, but makes the listener reject any thought of having another narrator in his stead. Gaiman communicates his understanding of his own stories and characters from beginning to end. In this latest of Gaiman's clever, dark fantasies, an orphaned boy is raised by ghosts in the local graveyard. Gaiman gives each specter a different--and wholly appropriate--voice, but he doesn't stop there. He even goes so far as to change a character's accent ever so slightly after she comes back from years and years abroad. Best of all, Gaiman performs a shift of character voice that is an absolute showstopper when he reveals the villain. Really--it made this listener stop dead on her walk home in dreadful anticipation. Neil Gaiman did an excellent job of narrating his story. It kept me captivated. I was sad when the story ended because I just loved Nobody Owens. I really hope that Neil Gaiman writes a sequel to the book somehow, so we can meet up with Bod and Silas again.

It was such a pleasure to listen to this book. An adventure tale that captured my imagination with the first sentences,it held it until the very end. The narration was perfect also. As I listened I could visualize the author creating these wonderful charatacters and I'm sure only he could have brought them so vividly to life. I hope that no one is put off from purchasing this because of the 'YA' category. I think it would be enjoyed by lovers of fiction of almost every age.

This is the only Gaiman I've read so far but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Gaiman himself is an excellent narrator and the story is like a breath of fresh air. I found it engaging and could not stop listening to it. I then went on to listen to it a second time because I enjoyed it that much.

I've been following Gaiman since the first Sandman comic book. I was surprised and delighted not by how great this book is(which it is) but how well Gaiman narrates it. Gaiman allows you to feel and see each character. Although I found a couple of parts predictable it was nevertheless well written by a great author.
