Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential: How nice that Neil Gaiman writes fairytales for adults. And how lucky for us that he tells the story in his own cackling, drawling, hissing, and murmuring voices. My commute, exercise regimen, and 21st century urban existence vanished as I was drawn into Gaiman's story of quest, romance, murder, and adventure. This is not Mother Goose - this is a wondrous world of magic glass, witches, ogres, and unicorns that I didn't want to leave. ?Beth Anderson

Publisher's Summary

In the sleepy English countryside of decades past, there is a town that has stood on a jut of granite for 600 years. And immediately to the east stands a high stone wall, for which the village is named. Here in the town of Wall, Tristran Thorn has lost his heart to the hauntingly beautiful Victoria Forester. One crisp October night, as they watch, a star falls from the sky, and Victoria promises to marry Tristran if he'll retrieve the star and bring it back for her. It is this promise that sends Tristran through the only gap in the wall, across the meadow, and into the most unforgettable adventure of his life.

This gem was my first experience with Neil Gaiman's writing, but won't be my last. I was delighted by the quirky imaginative twists the author makes in this fantasy, folk-lore fiction novel. His bright mind took a story of a man in a small villiage seeking love, to the heights of a sparkling quest story. I kept wishing I could think up story turns in my stories for my grandchildren about the soft redwood forests the way Mr. Gaiman thought up the switchbacks and canyon leaps he took while inventing this story. I will share with you that the story is not for everyone - my husband, who loved the Dune series and thinks Margaret Atwood's science fiction is best read multiple times, couldn't even make it though the story because he thought it plodded. I can hardly believe it was the same book we read, because I thought Stardust sparkled!

This is a cute enough story, but it's nothing I'd read again. The characters are likeable enough, but the love story is sort of skimmed over- and since it's a fairy tale it's mostly a love story- and why characters act a certian way is sometimes unclear. There's no mystery to what I think is intended to leave at least some surprise for the end, but it is a cute story. Gaiman has a wonderful way with words and can tell even a so so story well. It may be worth a read, but if you're the kind of person who really only wants books you'll want to read over and over, I'd pass on this one and read his American Gods instead.

This was an absolutely amazing book, a terrific read, and I love that it was narrated by Neil Gaimen himself. However, I have to agree that it is absolutely NOT a kid's book. The sex is a little too graphic for that. Not "dirty", but not for children.

This is advertised as a kids audiobook. It has sexual content that I would not want a child under 16 to hear.
