Publisher's Summary

Lady Chatterley's Lover was the subject of one of the most infamous trials of the 20th century when Penguin was prosecuted under the Obscene Publications Act. However, with expert witnesses for the defence, including E.M. Forster, Penguin was acquitted and permitted to publish in 1960. The book became a best seller largely on account of explicit scenes of a sexual nature and use of four letter words. However, re-reading again over 40 years later, one realises that although the sex scenes are still graphic even today, the book is about much more than sex. It covers love, class, disability, family relationships, infertility, politics, and that 'bitch-goddess' success.

When I tried to read this book, I found it somewhat difficult due to the dialect used by some of the characters. Emilia Fox, however, reads it beautifully. Her rendering of the various male and female voices and the varied dialects is masterful and her pacing is perfect. I've listened to a LOT of audio books and I'm really fussy about the quality of narration, but after listening to this book, Ms. Fox has rocketed right to the top of my list of all-time favorite narrators.

This book starts off slowly but once the sex gets rolling (and there is a lot of sex in this book), it just keeps getting better. I couldn't possibly put this recording aside. There's some pretty "nasty" talk in this book but the way Emilia Fox reads it, it just sound sensual.

This book caused much stir among readers for a good reason. Creative descriptions but a good plot as well. The author makes us feel for the protagonist and almost cheer for her. I would not recommend letting children read this.

Maybe this book was really explicit and great in its day, but besides the porn scenes and descriptions of anatomy, I don't see what was so literarily great with this novel. I suppose if you are interested in it from the historical viewpoint, if you want to know why this was a highly sought after and critically publicized banned book in the early twentieth century then take a listen.
