Publisher's Summary

In I Am Legend, a plague has decimated the world, and those unfortunate enough to survive are transformed into blood-thirsty creatures of the night. Robert Neville is the last living man on earth. Every other man, woman, and child has become a vampire, and they are all hungry for Neville's blood. By day, he is the hunter, stalking the sleeping undead through the abandoned ruins of civilization. By night, he barricades himself in his home and prays for the dawn. How long can one man survive in a world of vampires?

"The most clever and riveting vampire novel since Dracula." (Dean Koontz)
"I think the author who influenced me most as a writer was Richard Matheson. Books like I Am Legend were an inspiration to me." (Stephen King)

From AudioFile

In a world populated by disease-ridden vampires, Robert Neville (who is immune) tries to survive, using his wits, skill, and cunning to avoid becoming a victim of the bloodthirsty night-dwellers. The incomparable talents of Robertson Dean shine as he becomes Neville, and the listener can only follow his lead ever deeper into this nightmare world. Dean has a unique voice and manages to make the storytelling a personal experience. We are there with him, panicking one minute, sighing with relief the next, aching with intolerable loneliness, then facing terrifying clashes with the vampires. This is one of those magical audiobooks that you simply have to enjoy in one session, so be sure to set aside the time. (c) AudioFile 2007

I didn't listen to this book until I had already watched the movie, which I thought was good. After listening to the book I was pleasently suprised with the differnces. Near the end it really sends you for a loop! Much better ending than the movie!

Wow, wow, wow. I loved the book and I loved the narrarator. I've read some reviews that complain about the narrarator and so I was hesitant to purchase the book for that reason alone. I think the narrarator can make or break or story for me. However, I thought Robertson Dean did the job perfectly. I was completed mesmerized by the story. Although I truly enjoyed the movie, the back was far more haunting and I think the author did an excellent job portraying the loneliness this man suffered as well as all the psychological problems that come from being entirely alone and fighting for your life for 3 years.

If you understand that this book was written in the 50's and you understand that time and how people thought, it's pretty interesting. It has some major low spots that are boring, but the story itself and the thoughts it provokes are good. It's different than anything I have read. It's not amazing but it was worth the $5 I paid for it when it was on sale.

Now on the pretense that I've not seen Omega Man, but I have seen I Am Legend the movie and enjoyed it; this book made me wish they'd have actually followed it in the most recent iteration. I was amazed, yet pleased, at the differences. The ending I still wasn't satisfied with, only because I wanted More!, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't make sense and complete this story in a nice little package.

If you have any interest, and definitely if you like I Am Legend the movie, I believe you will enjoy this deeper descent into Robert Neville's madness and enjoy the true story of why He Is Legend.

Although sometimes a little slow, this book wraps up beautifully. Towards the end I couldn't figure out where it was headed, but oh man when it gets there it is totally worth the trip. One of the best stories I have listened too, since Across the Nightingale Floor. Buy it and enjoy!
