Publisher's Summary

Atlas Shrugged is the "second most influential book for Americans today" after the Bible, according to a joint survey conducted by the Library of Congress and the Book of the Month Club.

This is the story of a man who said that he would stop the motor of the world - and did. Is he a destroyer or a liberator? Why does he fight his hardest battle not against his enemies, but against the woman he loves?

Tremendous in scope, breathtaking in its suspense, Atlas Shrugged is Ayn Rand's magnum opus and launched an ideology and a movement. With the publication of this work in 1957, Rand gained an instant following and became a phenomenon. Atlas Shrugged emerged as a premier moral apologia for capitalism, a defense that had an electrifying effect on millions of readers (and now listeners) who had never heard capitalism defended in other than technical terms.

Atlas Shrugged is a masterpiece. Not a masterpiece of prose. Not really the best fiction ever. HOWEVER, this is an engaging novel that gives the reader an exceptional insight into economics and politics. The novel draws stark contrast between those who create wealth (by working hard), those who plunder it, and those who cry for the looting. This should be required reading late in high school or early in University.

Of course, this book oversimplifies much; but therein lies the brilliance of the work. Ayn Rand's simple story is so full of truth and prophecy that I find myself continually shocked by the present day parallels as I listen. I read the book once, and listened to this audio release twice (all in the last 12 years). I learn or consider something new each time. I'm sure this is not the last time I will listen....

This really is a must listen!

More than once I tried to read this book but couldn't get past the one-dimensional characters and the improbable plot. Then came the Great Financial Crisis of '08 and news accounts of Alan Greenspan's devotion to Ayn Rand, so thought it was worth another try. I listened about an hour-at-a-time during evening dog-walks and it took a few months to get through it, but it was both an enjoyable and worthwhile effort that allowed me to understand the ideological attraction and the historical irony of the story. Best of all, when Rand gets into her frequent "rant mode", I could let my mind wander without losing any continuity. Christopher Hurt does an admirable job of bringing life to the characters and is especially good with the snivelers and whiners.

At times a little preachy, but overall it mirrors our current times, and raises doubt as to our country's current direction. Yet at the same time it has an excellent story.

This is the second Ayn Rand book I have listened to which was read by Christopher Hurt. The other was The Fountainhead. Mr Hurt is excellent at his job. In both cases he raised the experience of listening to one that allowed me to enter the novel without the feeling that there was an intermediary, and yet still adding to the experience through the use of his voice.
The book itself remains excellent. What is frightening is the sense that the news that will be broadcast tonight on CNN could just as well move into the background of this book without alteration.
