Publisher's Summary

Here begins one of the most remarkable works of history ever fashioned. All the great battles are here, of course, from Bull Run through Shiloh, the Seven Days, Second Manassas to Antietam, and Perryville in the fall of 1862, but so are the smaller and often equally important engagements on both land and sea: Ball's Bluff, Fort Donelson, Pea Ridge, Island Ten, New Orleans, Monitor versus Merimac, and Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaign, to mention only a few.

And perhaps never before have these conflicts been so clearly, so dramatically, and so excitingly presented. The word "narrative" is the key, not only to this extraordinary book's incandescence, but also to its truth. The story is told entirely from the point of view of the people involved in it. The listener not only learns what was happening in the North and South, on the political, military, diplomatic, and home fronts, he lives through the events as if he were there. This is the way it was, in its entirety, as far as Shelby Foote could discover it during years of exhaustive research.

Don't miss the other volumes in Shelby Foote's Civil War: A Narrative series, coming soon!.

This 3-volume set is really fantastic. Foote recounts a huge number of facts about the civil war, providing important context (e.g., the political ramifications of events), and manages to keep it interesting throughout. This is a very long haul, and there were many times when I wished that Foote was less good at his craft so that I could put this series down and move on, but I wanted to know what happened. I highly recommend this series.

Fantastic Listen. Every American should listen to this book. Excellent coverage of the war and the men who fought on both sides. This book is NOT just a list of dry facts. I thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish.

THE INFORMATION PRESENTED IN THIS BOOK SHOULD GIVE EVERYONE A PERSPECTIVE OF THE WAR AND IT'S REAL UNDERTONES. THE NARRATOR LEAVES A LOT TO BE DESIRED.

I was drawn to this book after years of living in Virginia and passing signs every 30 seconds mark some major (or often minor) event in the Civil War. Even from that perspective this book is a masterpiece. It is so well written and informative that you can't put it down (or I guess press stop(?)) Be prepared for the second and third volumes, because you won't want to miss them.

The author, Shelby Foote, was, of course, the Southern gentleman whose cozy comments spiced and enlivened Ken Burns' masterpiece, THE CIVIL WAR. It would have been nice to have Foote's reading of this 3 volume set, but one can't have everything. This narration is good, very clear and easy to follow, has an absence of quirks, and is quite cozy in his own way. It took me 4 months to read this set--well over 100 hours--and it was well worth it. Foote's great work is not just for Civil War buffs; it's a masterpiece of American literature too. I can't recommend this reading highly enough.
