Publisher's Summary

A spellbinding amalgam of murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue....

It's about the disappearance 40 years ago of Harriet Vanger, a young scion of one of the wealthiest families in Sweden...and about her octogenarian uncle, determined to know the truth about what he believes was her murder.

It's about Mikael Blomkvist, a crusading journalist recently at the wrong end of a libel case, hired to get to the bottom of Harriet's disappearance...and about Lisbeth Salander, a 24-year-old, pierced and tattooed genius hacker possessed of the hard-earned wisdom of someone twice her age, who assists Blomkvist with the investigation.

This unlikely team discovers a vein of nearly unfathomable iniquity running through the Vanger family, astonishing corruption in the highest echelons of Swedish industrialism - and an unexpected connection between themselves.

What the Critics Say

"Cases rarely come much colder than the decades-old disappearance of teen heiress Harriet Vanger from her family's remote island retreat north of Stockholm, nor do fiction debuts hotter than this European bestseller . . . At once a strikingly original thriller and a vivisection of Sweden's dirty not-so-little secrets, this first of a trilogy introduces a provocatively odd couple." (Publishers Weekly)
"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a striking novel. Just when I was thinking there wasn't anything new on the horizon, along comes Stieg Larsson with this wonderfully unique story. I was completely absorbed." (Michael Connelly)

From AudioFile

Two complex stories are woven seamlessly together--first, the mysterious disappearance 20 years ago of the daughter of one of Sweden's wealthiest families, and second, a tale of financial corruption and libel. Mikael Blomkvist, investigative journalist, and Lisbeth Salander, a genius hacker with a past, are the two central characters, with many more playing important parts. Simon Vance is outstanding, as is his narration. His voices are so natural and fit so well with their characters that the listener is completely transported into the story. Despite an unhurried tempo, the book never bogs down as the plot is untangled thread by thread. This production exemplifies an extraordinary match between book and narrator. (c) AudioFile 2008

Certainly a lot of intrigue - but overall, a very dark novel.

After being a member of audible for a couple years, this is the first book I feel I have to comment on. Surprisingly good and hard to stop listening too. I often listen to audiobooks as I go to bed, but this one kept me awake wanting to hear more. In the morning, I'd wake up and immediately press play on my ipod.
The characters are unique and interesting with plot developments that are new from other books I've listened to lately. I think the setting in Sweden also adds an element that makes the story different in tone and context that is refreshing to American listeners.
I've recommended this book to friends, which I do on rare occasion, and all have thanked me for the suggestion after they get into it.
Do a little research on Stieg, died too young...heart attack. Very disappointed that there won't be more to come (the second book is as good as this one, a third has yet to be published and a fourth was half finished when he died. I read something that said Swedish law prevents someone else from finishing it..?...). Maybe his long-time girlfriend and partner did have a hand in writing a good bit, and will publish some fiction on her own some day.

Wasn't sure when I started this - wasn't crazy about the narrator at first. But, the story got better and better. Its turned out to be one of my favorites. If you feel like I did at first stick with it - its worth it.

I suppose one should mention the quality of the writing which rises above most authors in this thriller/mystery/hi-tech genre, or whatever you call it. The characters are three dimensional and totally alive. When you start there and combine the narration by Simon Vance you've got yourself a fantastic, imaginative ride. I can't imagine anyone not liking this unless some of the sexual violence turns them off. (it does get gruesome, but it's all in character)

You should be aware that there is much nasty, twisted sex in this book. But the book is full of horrible rape, affairs, homosexuality and child rape. Disturbing.
