Publisher's Summary

A spellbinding amalgam of murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue....

It's about the disappearance 40 years ago of Harriet Vanger, a young scion of one of the wealthiest families in Sweden...and about her octogenarian uncle, determined to know the truth about what he believes was her murder.

It's about Mikael Blomkvist, a crusading journalist recently at the wrong end of a libel case, hired to get to the bottom of Harriet's disappearance...and about Lisbeth Salander, a 24-year-old, pierced and tattooed genius hacker possessed of the hard-earned wisdom of someone twice her age, who assists Blomkvist with the investigation.

This unlikely team discovers a vein of nearly unfathomable iniquity running through the Vanger family, astonishing corruption in the highest echelons of Swedish industrialism - and an unexpected connection between themselves.

What the Critics Say

"Cases rarely come much colder than the decades-old disappearance of teen heiress Harriet Vanger from her family's remote island retreat north of Stockholm, nor do fiction debuts hotter than this European bestseller . . . At once a strikingly original thriller and a vivisection of Sweden's dirty not-so-little secrets, this first of a trilogy introduces a provocatively odd couple." (Publishers Weekly)
"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a striking novel. Just when I was thinking there wasn't anything new on the horizon, along comes Stieg Larsson with this wonderfully unique story. I was completely absorbed." (Michael Connelly)

I loved this book because not only did it keep me guesing until the end, I felt transported to Sweden, felt like I could see, hear, smell and feel what it was like to be in the different locations in the book. Maybe a better way of saying it is that the characters and the places came alive for me!

This is so compelling and the narration is the best I've heard. The first part is a little confusing but its not vital to understand every small detail. Then the story totally takes off. Simon Vance is terrific.

One of the best audiobooks I've listened to. Not a big fan of crime fiction but this was smart, interesting, and had flawed but lovable characters. Lots of difficult to remember Swedish names, but stick it out... it's rare I find an audiobook that can capture my attention so much so that I can't wait to get in the car to listen.
