Publisher's summary

Bryson brings his unique brand of humor to travel writing as he shoulders his backpack, keeps a tight hold on his wallet and heads for Europe. Travelling with Stephen Katz - also his wonderful sidekick in A Walk in the Woods - he wanders from Hammerfest in the far north, to Istanbul on the cusp of Asia.

As he makes his way round this incredibly varied continent, he retraces his travels as a student twenty years before with caustic hilarity.

this and the thunderbolt kid, are Bryson's worst

not a great book. talking about traveling through Europe with Katz. basically it is a poor man's walk in the woods, European style. only slightly better than watching your uncle Fred's vacation movies on 8 mm.

Wonderful Fun

Love love love Bryson’s way with words and humor. He gives such interesting descriptions of European towns and makes me laugh out loud as I listen to his stories about his struggles and delights as he travels.

I did not care for the reader’s voice—it did not match my idea of how Bryson would sound. The reader was too British-sounding. It almost made me stop listening.

One of My BB Faves

It's interesting how different people's reactions are to what they read. I've read a lot of Bryson's books, and this is one of my favorites. Something about it was very satisfyingt to me, and nothing in it evoked the annoyance that some readers experienced, Only after I listened to the audio book did I realize it was abridged. At first I was bummed, but after thinking about it, decided to trust the editor. However, the publisher's summary has it all wrong and should be deleted.

Been There -- Didn't Do That!!

Bryson is like the Professor we all wanted to have in College, the one your friends had but you couldn't get in. His intelligent narratives and thorough investigation will make you beg to listen to his next book. Although Bryson and I don't share the same politics, I love his writing just the same. In addition, he is one of the few writers who do justice to their books as the reader.

I just love all things Bill Bryson

What made the experience of listening to Neither Here Nor There the most enjoyable?

Bill Bryson's voice alone just makes me smile. I find whatever he writes about to be entertaining. He manages to make fairly mundane events memorable and humorous.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked learning about the different countries. I have never been overseas and it was rather like taking a cruise - you learned a little bit about each area and then had to move on.

What does Bill Bryson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

It is hard to define but when he narrates his own books it just feels like you are in the room with him having a conversation about his travels. I recently listened to A Walk in the Woods and while the narrator did a good job it just wasn't the same as if Bill had narrated it. The humor just seems to come from within him and it comes across in his narration. The more audiobooks I listen to the more I enjoy the ones the are read by the author. It has a much more personal touch - for obvious reasons.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes and no - I always hate it when they end.

Any additional comments?

I wish that Bill would narrate all his books - time consuming I know but of all the books I listen to - he adds the most to the narration. If you haven't read or listened to a Bill Bryson book just pick any one - they are all good.
