Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential: A Pulitzer Prize guarantees a great story; an Audie Award guarantees a captivating narration - Middlesex has both, plus Oprah's stamp of approval to boot. But for this essentials list, it's the Audie that carries the most weight, and Kristoffer Tabori is most deserving of this prize. He makes this generation-spanning saga an effortless listen, using unique characterizations to seamlessly weave the past and the present. Absolutely captivating. —Diana Dapito

Publisher's Summary

In the spring of 1974, Calliope Stephanides, a student at a girls' school in Grosse Pointe, finds herself drawn to a chain-smoking, strawberry-blonde classmate with a gift for acting. The passion that furtively develops between them - along with Callie's failure to develop physically - leads Callie to suspect that she is not like other girls. In fact, she is not really a girl at all.

The explanation for this shocking state of affairs is a rare genetic mutation - and a guilty secret - that have followed Callie's grandparents from the crumbling Ottoman Empire to Prohibition-era Detroit and beyond, outlasting the glory days of the Motor City, the race riots of 1967, and the family's second migration, into the foreign country known as suburbia. Thanks to the gene, Callie is part girl, part boy. And even though the gene's epic travels have ended, her own odyssey has only begun.

Spanning eight decades - and one unusually awkward adolescence - Jeffrey Eugenides' long-awaited second novel is a grand, original fable of crossed bloodlines, the intricacies of gender, and the deep, untidy promptings of desire.

  • Audie Award Winner, Fiction (Unabridged), 2003

" "Impressive [and] wonderfully engaging." (The New York Times)
"Eugenides proves that he is not only a unique voice in modern literature but also well versed in the nature of the human heart. Highly recommended." (Library Journal )
"A towering achievement...a story that manages to be both illuminating and transcendent...[Eugenides] has emerged as the great American writer many of us suspected him of being." (Los Angeles Times Book Review)
"Not only are his interpretations of the characters astonishingly credible, but his internalization of the narrative is nothing short of amazing." (Publishers Weekly)

From AudioFile

Middlesex, by the much praised Jeffrey Eugenides, presents a huge problem for any reader. Its narrator, a Greek-American born with ambiguous genitalia, spent her/his childhood as an (allegedly) gorgeous little girl, but on discovering at adolescence that he was genetically a boy, transformed Callie into Cal. Kristoffer Tabori does many things well, but at no point does his manly voice sound as if it were ever a pretty little girl's. Further, his Greeks don't sound Greek, and his Cal talks with the same whiny accent as his Greek-born Granny, although Cal was born in Detroit and educated at a fancy Grosse Pointe private school. Both this novel and this production fail to convince or even entertain very much. Seriously disappointing. 2003 Audie Award Winner (c) AudioFile 2003

Excellent book, terrific audio production. One of the very best of the ca. 150 I've listened to over the past years. Try also "The Darling" for a similarly complex and magnetic story and great production quality.

This is truly one of the best books I've ever read. The story is amazing. The characters are authentic in their flaws and in their charm. However, what makes this one of the best ever is the craft and voice of the storytelling. To compare it to two of my favorite books, Beloved and Possession, it is much more accessible than either but without, somehow, losing any of the rapture that comes with real craftsmanship. It is like Tess of the D'Urbervilles, but epic.

I have listened to over 100 books and this is without a doubt the best of the best! Eugenides takes us on a lovely and inspiring saga that is not soon forgotten. You won't regret this purchase, as a matter of fact you'll want to listen over and over again.

An incredible journey into places and events you have rarely if ever experienced. An unforgettable foray into a rare world of the hermaphrodite. An excellent read.

I thought the story was great with historical accuarcy regarding the events during the story. I enjoyed the naration. Kristoffer was a great choice. As an actor, his reading of the story was exactly what made the 20 plus hours enjoyable.
The authors detail about this condition and speaking from the main characters point of view was thoughtful.
