Publisher's Summary

This first volume of the Earthsea Cycle is a tale of wizards, dragons, and shadows, played out in a world like and unlike our world, in an archipelago of imagined islands. The geography is exact, as are the laws and limits of the magic used by the wizards of the isles.

The young boy Sparrowhawk realizes his own uncommon powers while defending his village against an enemy horde. He becomes an apprentice to Gont Island's Master Wizard; but impatience to learn faster takes him far from home to Roke Island, where he enters the School at Roke - the school for Wizards famous throughout Earthsea. As a student of magic, Sparrowhawk exceeds his years in accomplishment. Pride and jealousy drive the boy to try certain dangerous powers too soon, and a terrible evil is let loose in the land. Thus begins the chase and the hunt between young wizard and shadow-creature across the stone-peaked islands and the farthest unknown waters of Earthsea.

This is an adventure story, a Quest, a tale of a proud, incautious boy who meddles too early with the Dark. It is a pure fantasy telling about a real thing: a boy coming into his power and his manhood...coming of age.

I was quite surprised at how many critics posted remarks regarding this tale's narration. Myself and my children have loved this story for over 2 decades, and we all found the excitement conveyed by the narrator Harlan Ellison to be well placed and adds to our enjoyment of this wonderful story. The fact that Ursula Le Guin choose him, and melds her voice with his in the beginning and the end, speaks highly that Harlan Ellison has spoken her tale as it ought to be enjoyed -with passion.

Interesting how life's journey takes the young Sparrow Hawk on well learned lessons. Story had some good twists and turns in it. Choices between good and evil were not always easy to figure out. Book kept my attention and was a climatic journey.

Harlan Ellison is an excellent SF writer, and he should stick to what he knows best. I love the whole Earthsea series, and am pleased to see that this is the only one he narrates. As another commenter said, his pace was frenetic -- I'd add, at times, bordering on hysterical. He almost ruined a great story. I stuck to it because I love the book, but there were many times I almost gave up.

It was only because I really enjoy the story that I got through this. Plus a little bit of crazy optimism that it just had to get better, that someone else would take over the narration soon. Ellison's reading was frenetic and filled with irritating stutter affectations and breathless swallowing sounds that destroyed the continuity of the story and drove me spare. One can only hope someone else will redo this someday.

I heard this was a wonderful book so I downloaded it. Unfortunately I couldn't get into it. I listened for 1.5 hours and felt like I was just slogging through it and finally quit.
