They took everything. Home, family, possession. They gave her a name. Arha, the Eaten One. They dedicated her life to the priestess of the ancient and nameless Powers of the Earth. And set her down at the Place of the Tombs in the desert of Atuan. Then, suddenly, a thief came to the dark, endless labyrinth of her kingdom, seeing the greatest treasure of the Tombs, the broken Ring of Erreth-Akbe. A young wizard, Ged...

With millions of copies sold, Ursula K. LeGuin's Earthsea Cycle, which began with A Wizard of Earthsea, has earned a treasured place in the hearts of fantasy lovers everywhere. Compex, innovative, and deeply moral, this quintessential fantasy sequence has been compared to the work of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, and has helped make LeGuin one of the most distinguished fantasy and science fiction writers of all time.

Tenar was born on the night that the nameless one died. Now it is her destiny to become the next priestess. She has to give up her name and life to be transformed into the new priestess. However she has to make a choice between destiny or her own desires. This book has some good twist and turns in the plot. This story is well written and entertaining.

Since this was book II, the style wasn't unexpected. Book I seemed to linger on the outskirts of the mind. Not intrusive. Just there. Kinda loitering <laugh>. Went back for book II. Took some adjusting of expectations, but worth the effort. Has the same air as the titus groans stories minus the surreal. Like a fairy tale read by a very favorite aunt. Nice.

Narration fabulous!
I completely enjoyed this version. Thank you! I wish I could filter the subsequent book offerings based on the narrator!

I find listening to the Earthsea novels easy and enjoyable. My only problem is the narration. She is too sentimental! I wish she would just READ the book instead off adding her fake emotion to it.

A young child, taken from her family and plopped into the middle of a cult-like religious community of women. Taught to worship and care for the long dead, forgotten gods of the ancients. Brainwashed and expected to be a powerful prietess with killing menace... but is that who she really is? This story starts slow, and while I felt for the girl, it took sometime for me to enjoy the telling.
