The main character's personna took a little while to grow on me. His NY style personality seemed to be your stereo typical male chauvenist type...but he grew on me nonetheless because it was smartly written. The author knows how to create interactions among his characters that were devoid of annoying behaviors, yet still have their imperfections. This is an important criteria since annoying characters can really ruin a good story. Last, but not least, it was well read. I found myself laughing and chuckling quite a bit while i listened to this book. It was very entertaining.

I didn’t want to stop reading. It’s a long book. I had a hard time putting it down. Lots of suspense. Many times I was saying come on, come on - eager to find out what was going to happen next. John Corey is a smartalecky, arrogant cop working for the FBI. He has many entertaining one-liners and jokes. I liked his humor, but humor is subjective and some readers may not like it. There were a few surprises along the way. Some parts were a little slow, but the last half was the best. The ending was good and complete enough for me, although the killer Asad was still alive and un-caught. The story continues in the sequel “The Lion.”

Asad was a well done bad guy. He’s a stealthy smart killing machine. I consider “The Day of the Jackal” by Forsyth as great. Lion’s Game reminded me of Jackal, but LG was missing the following. I wanted to see how Asad got his information, how his sources got information, and how Asad and those sources communicated.

Asad interacted with many people. It was hard to believe they did not recognize him. Asad’s picture was all over the TV and newspapers.

One negative - a stupid event: Two guys know Asad is in the area with a sniper rifle. So why are they walking outside alone with no bullet proof vests or other protection?

NARRATOR:
Scott Brick did an excellent job as John Corey because Scott does cocky arrogance well. John Corey’s arrogance was written in an entertaining way so it worked. But I’ve given Scott Brick 1 and 2 stars for his narration of other books where he was too arrogant, and it detracted from the book. Scott narrated females nicely here.

This book would have gotten three stars but I really liked the character of John Corey, who raised it up to four stars for me. The middle 80 percent of the book seemed like the same stuff over and over again. I enjoyed the buildup to the conclusion, but prefer books with closure. The Lion is on my "to-listen" list and I hope that DeMille has done the right thing by letting our terrorist friend rest in literary peace at the conclusion of that one. Meanwhile I'm continuing to follow Corey's exploits by beginning a listen of Night Fall on the commute home today. It's my fifth DeMille book. He's a gifted author.

Good, but overrated by reviewers

Yep, this book is over 21 hours long, and in my opinion, that's still not long enough. It takes a lot to dedicate oneself to such a lengthy book, but this one is more than worth it.

Nelson DeMille has a real winner with the character of John Corey. Some people may find him offensive sometimes, but I think he comes off as very real. He's one of the few characters that I've come across in a very long time who literally made me laugh out loud on several occasions.

The story itself is very good. We get to get inside the head of the terrorist as well as those who are trying to catch him. The point of view switches back and forth throughout the book, and the effect is riveting. As far as mystery novels go, I would rank this right up at the top. I just wish I would've found this gem sooner.

Scott Brick as the narrator is his usual brilliant self. He's actually the reason I stumbled upon DeMille to begin with. I'm glad I did.

If you are a fan of a great mystery, do not pass this book up! When you finish this one, check out "Night Fall" which is the next story with Detective John Corey. You'll love that, too.

Have listened to about 40 audio books now and this is one of the best, especially since I didn't really know what to expect (didn't know the author or narrator).
Anyway the storyline was good and the characters great. The Narrater did a fantastic job in bringing the characters to life, added timing on the humor etc.
Thoroughly engaging read.
