Non-human hominids!!

The characters were believable, and I absolutely love imagining contact between ancient human groups in the distant past. The perspective of a people who have lived on a dormant volcano for time immemorial, and to have that volcano suddenly come to life, it is an awesome plot point to address. And I think it was well-done!
I wasn’t a fan of the interactions being exclusively violent between the species, however, but I’m about to check out the next book in the series, and maybe there will be more playful interactions between the species.
Overall, totally loved the book, I laughed, I cried, and I want to read more!!!

A Very Appreciated Story

I appreciate everything about this book. I appreciate the narrator and her narration, for it evoked in my mind a visual of African peoples, a village of people, seated in front of the storyteller, listening to a tale that would continue to be told for several nights until its completion, though not end.

I appreciate how this story could very well have been the story of my very own family, my very own tribe. I appreciate, perhaps most of all, the obvious research author Steven Barnes did for this book. As a healer, so much resonated with me.

Well done Steven Barnes.
