Chuck Palahniuk, the author of the New York Times best-sellers Fight Club and Lullaby, is known for his edgy novels, and Rant is no exception. Palahniuk presents this fictional biography of Buster "Rant" Casey in a series of vignettes told by the people who knew him best. As intricate as a spider web, Rant succeeds in recounting the story of one man's life only through the eyes of others. But the question remains, "Who was Rant Casey?"©2007 Chuck Palahniuk (P)2007 Recorded Books Funny

Critic reviews

"This dark religious parable (there's even a resurrection) from the master of grotesque excess may not attract new readers, but it will delight old ones." ( Publishers Weekly)
"Outrageous but not quite over the top, full of energetic humor, Rant...is a memorable portrait of the cults that gather around authentically different people and a portrait of dystopia that feels unsettlingly contemporary." ( Booklist)

dark and disturbing

I read this book back when it first came out, and loved it. So much so, I wanted to listen to the audio reading of it. I have to say it was even MORE enjoyable in this format. The characters were easier to keep track of, and came to life more.
This book is Dark (as your expect from Chuck) but also fun and hilarious at times. It will warp your brain a little, but in a good way.
Highly recommend.

Dark Crazy Fun Ride

this is my very favorite Chuck Palahniuk book. A redneck messiah, cunnilingus, a pandemic and just a pinch of sci-fi.

shivers!

Always disturbing and never disappointing. The creativity involved in making the implausible, plausible sucks me in every time. As usual, I’m not sure how I feel about it until the very last sentence. Dark twisted and human, I liked this one.

Another gem

The story has the feeling of a slow build, and maybe a little dry at the beginning. Then it all comes together right at the end. The performers do a great job with a ton of dialogue that jumps around. It could have gotten confusing without that talent. This may be a rare book that is better the second time reading it.

Great Palahniuk Twist

Narrators were great, and it's a great story, but the oral history writing style gets irritating after a while, as each time someone speaks, they first introduce themselves, breaking the momentum of the story.

Otherwise, this is a great Dystopian Fiction piece. It is a departure from the style of Chuck Palahniuk's other, more well-known pieces such as Fight Club and Choke. The oral history format, while irritating to listen to after a while, is an interesting approach to creating a tale of fiction.

Good Story, Despite writing Style

This story blew me away. There's not much you can say without giving away the plot, but the fact that the back cover description is a perpetuated lie throughout the book, that you have to ask yourself what is true. So meta.

Warning: the book description is a lie

Great ensemble reading of a fantastic story. This is the book that hooked me on Palahniuk.

Classic Chuck

I read this originally in 2015 or so and just re-read it as this audiobook! Wow! The cast really nails it! It’s a wild story, and you really have to pay attention, but the payoff is worth it!

One of my favorite books of all time!

Palahniuk disguises his message behind a creative, crude plot. Pay particular attention to the boosting and daytimer/nighttimer concepts. Therein lies interesting insight about life in the 21st century.

I loved that Palahniuk effectively weaves together the many points of view from the characters into a cohesive story. At first it was a little hard to follow, but once I caught on, it was pure entertainment. There are definitely some memorable chapters.

Listeners be warned, this is not for the faint of heart; crude, even disgusting at times. Still, you should've known if you're picking up a Palahniuk.

Enjoy.
