In a crowded courtroom in Mississippi, a jury returns a shocking verdict against a chemical company accused of dumping toxic waste into a small town's water supply, causing the worst "cancer cluster" in history. The company appeals to the Mississippi Supreme Court, whose nine justices will one day either approve the verdict or reverse it.

Who are the nine? How will they vote? Can one be replaced before the case is ultimately decided?

The chemical company is owned by a Wall Street predator named Carl Trudeau, and Mr. Trudeau is convinced the Court is not friendly enough. With judicial elections looming, he decides to try to purchase himself a seat on the Court. The cost is a few million dollars, a drop in the bucket for a billionaire like Mr. Trudeau. Through an intricate web of conspiracy and deceit, his political operatives recruit a young, unsuspecting candidate. They finance him, manipulate him, market him, and mold him into a potential Supreme Court justice. Their Supreme Court justice.

The Appeal is a powerful, timely, and shocking story of political and legal intrigue, a story that will leave listeners unable to think about our electoral process or judicial system in quite the same way ever again.

Although I don't pay much attention to elections of judges, I am now enlightened as to how much they influence our country.

Although it was not the ending I had hoped for, I am left to ponder how true the ending. The rich get richer and are rewarded for being bad.

I am also finally aware of how the religious right have been so solidly hoodwinked and coerced to vote for people that have no moral compass and who will continue to work against their better interests. I could never figure that out before. Grisham spells it out in great detail. I only wish the main character would have finally found his own moral voice. He kept hinting at it but it somehow never came about, or it came about in such a minor way that it did no good.

Now I get it

This is a well written book that left me craving it during the times I had to put it down.

While reading it, I experienced a sense of Deja Vu... As if I had experienced this before. I wouldn't be surprised if this book was a fictionized collage of events that really happened.

But I learned a lot from this book too. I read this title in the New York Times and instantly understood it: Appellate Panel Rejects E.P.A. Emission Limits

Not a documentary?

always awesome, but this ending is a bit unfinished... maybe not as satisfying either or?

rough ending

Interesting characters, good listen although I was disappointed in the ending. Not the best Grisham book that I have listened to and it lands right in the middle compared to his other plot lines.

Just ok

Brilliant as always

This was not my favorite John Grisham book. But it was very eye-opening and thought-provoking in terms of its real life application and ability to highlight the truths about our political system and its intersection with our justice system.

Pulled an all-nighter and was sad when finished. A great story depicting the many sides to life events.

Great Story

Listened to the entire book, however keeping all the characters straight was very difficult. Too many characters!

Good, although complicated

I struggled to follow because I'm use to the narrator using different voices for each character. I also felt there was a bit of jumping around that didn't transition well.

love mysteries

This book was great. It was a little long, but worth hanging in for a shocking end.
