Fresh from a six-month sojourn in Italy, Lady Julia returns home to Sussex to find her father's estate crowded with family and friends: but dark deeds are afoot at the deconsecrated abbey, and a murderer roams the ancient cloisters.

Much to her surprise, the one man she had hoped to forget, the enigmatic and compelling Nicholas Brisbane, is among her father's houseguests...and he is not alone. Not to be outdone, Julia shows him that two can play at flirtation and promptly introduces him to her devoted, younger, titled Italian count.

But the homecoming celebrations quickly take a ghastly turn when one of the guests is found brutally murdered in the chapel, and a member of Lady Julia's own family confesses to the crime. Certain of her cousin's innocence, Lady Julia resumes her unlikely and deliciously intriguing partnership with Nicholas Brisbane, setting out to unravel a tangle of deceit before the killer can strike again. When a sudden snowstorm blankets the abbey like a shroud, it falls to Lady Julia and Nicholas Brisbane to answer the shriek of murder most foul.

I was deeply torn about the first book. I think this book had a better rhythm than the first one in the series. The narrator was better this time around and the story flowed a little better to me. It is definitely a wordy book. Lots of descriptions to things but I think it really paints a picture of this old house and it’s many features. I will say, I’m not really sure how Julia and Brisbane’s relationship keeps moving forward. I don’t feel like their relationship, outside of interaction for the investigations, is developed very well but it is a light romance novel so I will just suspend that need for storyline and go with it. I will continue this series and see where it goes!

Better than the first book

Like the first, great melodrama, mystery and sexual tension. Fascinating characters. Perfect performance except for Portia.

Perfectly satisfying

Loved the story. Interesting twist within the plot. The narrator did a great job distinguishing the different people's voices. Looking forward to the next in the series

I binge-read (listened) to all the books in this series. They are all very good. There are a few minor issue with the narrator - words mispronounced for example - but I liked these a lot!
