Bryson brings his unique brand of humour to travel writing as he shoulders his backpack, keeps a tight hold on his wallet and heads for Europe. Travelling with Stephen Katz—also his wonderful sidekick in A Walk in the Woods—he wanders from Hammerfest in the far north, to Istanbul on the cusp of Asia. As he makes his way round this incredibly varied continent, he retraces his travels as a student twenty years before with caustic hilarity.©1999 Bill Bryson; (P)1999 Random House, Inc., Bantam Doubleday Dell Audio Publishing, A Division of Random House, Inc. “Bryson is first and foremost a storyteller—and a supremely comic and original one at that.”
Winnipeg Free Press

"A breezy and entertaining account of what it is like to be utterly at sea in a continent most of his readers will regard as familiar."
―Independent on Sunday

"Hugely funny (not snigger-snigger funny, but great-big-belly-laugh-till-you-cry funny)."
―Daily Telegraph

"Undoubtedly the most enjoyable travel book of the year."
―Time Out

"This is the travel book that every Inter-Rail vagrant would love to write; the Animal House of the genre."

This is a great book to listen to. Bill Bryson's humor is fantastic and his descriptions of traveling wonderful. I've already recommended it to my friends and family.

not a great book. talking about traveling through Europe with Katz. basically it is a poor man's walk in the woods, European style. only slightly better than watching your uncle Fred's vacation movies on 8 mm.

this and the thunderbolt kid, are Bryson's worst

I liked his colorful descriptions and enjoyed his adventures all over Europe. The narration could have been better.

Bill Bryson’s descriptive language of his travels.

It's interesting how different people's reactions are to what they read. I've read a lot of Bryson's books, and this is one of my favorites. Something about it was very satisfyingt to me, and nothing in it evoked the annoyance that some readers experienced, Only after I listened to the audio book did I realize it was abridged. At first I was bummed, but after thinking about it, decided to trust the editor. However, the publisher's summary has it all wrong and should be deleted.
