Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential: Death never sounded so good. This one probably tops the list of unexpected pleasures here at Audible. Fisher Stevens gives a rousing narration, perfectly delivering Christopher Moore's often off-color jokes in a lovely "dead"pan. A Dirty Job has won fans for both author and narrator, and it will keep winning them for years to come. —Chris Doheny

Publisher's Summary

Charlie Asher is a pretty normal guy. A little hapless, somewhat neurotic, sort of a hypochondriac. He's what's known as a Beta Male: the kind of fellow who makes his way through life by being careful and constant, you know, the one who's always there to pick up the pieces when the girl gets dumped by the bigger/taller/stronger Alpha Male.

But Charlie's been lucky. He owns a building in the heart of San Francisco, and runs a secondhand store with the help of a couple of loyal, if marginally insane, employees. He's married to a bright and pretty woman who actually loves him for his normalcy. And she, Rachel, is about to have their first child.

Yes, Charlie's doing okay for a Beta. That is, until the day his daughter, Sophie, is born. Just as Charlie, exhausted from the birth, turns to go home, he sees a strange man in mint-green golf wear at Rachel's hospital bedside, a man who claims that no one should be able to see him. But see him Charlie does, and from here on out, things get really weird.

People start dropping dead around him, giant ravens perch on his building, and it seems that everywhere he goes, a dark presence whispers to him from under the streets. Strange names start appearing on his nightstand notepad, and before he knows it, those people end up dead, too. Yup, it seems that Charlie Asher has been recruited for a new job, an unpleasant but utterly necessary one: Death. It's a dirty job. But hey, somebody's gotta do it.

"Moore's enthusiasm and skill make it convincing, and his affection for the cast of weirdos gives the book an unexpected poignancy." (Publishers Weekly)

Poorly conceived and clumsily written, this book is chock full of racism and profanity.

I couldn't tell whether or not the author meant this book to be a satire on the horror genre. If so it would fail in the attempt as the work is hardly clever enough to qualify as anything but meaningless garbage.

If I could get my money back from this purchase I'd continue to be unhappy as I'll never recoup the time I wasted on this book.

My friend recommended this book to me and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story is original and unique and a lot of fun. It kept me interested and made me laugh many, many times. I am looking for more Christopher Moore books as I am told his others are just as wonderful.

Very interesting plot - and the author presented it very well. It was very funny, too. I had to look around to make sure that nobody saw me laughing out loud. Truly entertaining. And Mr. Fisher Stevens was excellent in his narration.

I'm not much for humorous-adventure-fantasy, but there is a basic concept here that was fun at times. The narrator didn't work for me, way to perky, chirpy and bouncy and his execution of the daughter's voice was nails on a chalkboard for me. The first five minutes of the book is how it is all throughout.

The premise sounded good but the book was so slow and boring I couldn't finish it. Nothing much happened really slowly and uninterestingly. This was one of the first audio books I got but was definitely the most disappointing.

Wish I could return it :)
