Publisher's Summary

Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk is a novel made up of stories: 23 of them, to be precise. Twenty-three of the most horrifying, hilarious, mind-blowing, stomach-churning tales you'll ever encounter, sometimes all at once. They are told by people who have answered an ad headlined "Writers' Retreat: Abandon Your Life for Three Months", and who are led to believe that here they will leave behind all the distractions of "real life" that are keeping them from creating the masterpiece that is in them. But "here" turns out to be a cavernous and ornate old theater where they are utterly isolated from the outside world, and where heat and power and, most important, food are in increasingly short supply. And the more desperate the circumstances become, the more extreme the stories they tell, and the more devious their machinations become to make themselves the hero of the inevitable play/movie/nonfiction blockbuster that will surely be made from their plight.

Haunted is on one level a satire of reality television: The Real World meets Alive. It draws from a great literary tradition, The Canterbury Tales, The Decameron, the English storytellers in the Villa Diodati who produced, among other works, Frankenstein, to tell an utterly contemporary tale of people desperate that their story be told at any cost. Appallingly entertaining, Haunted is Chuck Palahniuk at his finest, which means his most extreme and his most provocative.

What the Critics Say

"[The stories] consistently, powerfully transcend their macabre premises to showcase the heart beating beneath the horrors." (Publishers Weekly)

From AudioFile

A writers' retreat that provides an opportunity for aspiring writers to get ahead provides the construct for this collection of stories, which are increasingly bizarre and filled with sexual preoccupations. If this retreat is supposed to free its participants of their demons as they explore their muses, its success is in question. However, the full-cast performance cannot be faulted. The actors create the realities of the stories vividly, draw out the drama, and bring out the personalities of the characters, generally making the stories as haunting as promised. © AudioFile 2005

Superior set up, many comical/horrific stories with an underlying satire on humanity. I loved it!

This book is only of particular taste to read. However, it expands your thoughts and immagination beyond what is comfortable for the average reader. It is kind of like a modern day Tales from the Crypt if you like that sort of reading.

This book was grotesque in the most beautiful way. True to Chuck's style, he brilliantly shows humanity by conveying the true ugliness within us all. I loved it. If you don't want a book that promotes thought and critical thinking, this book is not for you.

Brilliant.

This is absolutely the worst book I've ever come across. I was looking for a scarey suspense and what do I get, the dumbest thing I have ever listened to. I wish I hadn't wasted my credits. I wish audiobooks offered refunds. The part that really stinks is that I pay for those credits. This was listed under horror, I guess the horror was that you paid for this. I wonder how much the author had to pay the people that said it was good.

I loved this audiobook! Brilliant story, excellent narration, and completely original. I've read a few of the author's other books, which are always great, but this one is the best.
