Publisher's Summary

Two backcountry skiers find the body of a young woman embedded in the ice of a remote mountain creek. All through the night, police work with arc lights and chain saws to dig her out. But identification doesn't take as long. Abbie Cooper is wanted for murder and acts of eco-terrorism, and her picture is on law-enforcement computers all across America. But just how did she die? And what was the trail of events that led this joyous, golden child of a loving family so tragically astray?

In a journey of discovery and redemption, from the streets of New York to the daunting grandeur of the Rocky Mountains, The Divide delves into the dynamics of a fractured family and their struggle with the pain of lost happiness. Electrifying and heartbreaking, master storyteller Nicholas Evans' new novel delivers an extraordinary tale about the timeless power of nature, and about the yearnings, hopes, and disillusionments that connect, and separate, all men and women.

What the Critics Say

"Evans demonstrates the same intricacy of plot and depth of characterization that defined his international best-seller The Horse Whisperer....Sure to be a runaway success, this lyrical novel runs the gamut from devastation to despair to deliverance." (Booklist)

From AudioFile

Narrator Scott Brick sharply defines the characters in Nicholas Evans's thoughtful look at the gulf that divides people from one another. After 23 years of marriage Ben Cooper is bored and restless. His wife, Sarah, rages with righteous indignation when Ben decides to leave. When the Coopers learn of their daughter's death, questions and recriminations open old wounds and gouge tragic new ones. Brick's performance has just the right self-assuredness for characters who stubbornly rationalize behaviors that cause others pain. His directness nicely fits this sprawling story, while his voice, sometimes brusque, sometimes tender, makes listeners privy to each person's secrets. Evans spins a good story, and Brick makes it perfect listening for a cold winter's night. (c) AudioFile 2006

Long, drawn out and extremely boring. From the other reviews, I was looking forward to a good book, for a long road trip. This book nearly put me to sleep. Its only redeeming grace was Scott Brick, the narrator. If I made a horizontal line on a graph, to plot it's ups and downs, the line would be totally flat. VERY slow moving, no excitement, no suspense. I'd suggest not wasting your credits, money or especially your time.

I had a love hate relationship with this book! Although it could be a little slow in places, it was wonderful and heart wrenching all in one! Even though you know the ending before you get to it, I just kept pulling for the main character. This is one I'll listen to over and over again.

This was my first listen of a book by Nicholas Evans. My perception before (and after) reading this book is that he is a serial writer like Danielle Steele. Cranks out a large number of very similar style books.

The story was good. Light reading fare and certainly nothing I could not live for having not heard it. The narration (as with anything by Scott Brick) was fantastic.

So this is a good summer read. Nothing too heavy, but enough to keep you interested.

I loved it. Yes, as always, Scott Brick was great but this was a terrific story that made me feel entrenched in the characters lives. Don't miss this one. Believeable and well written.

This was a fascinating telling of a good family, apparently living the American dream, until things get seriously off track. Each point of view shows another angle of a complex situation. Even when some of the characters infuriated me at times, it was the author's skill that made them very real portrayals of flesh and blood people. The ending was sad, but satisfying. Great book and GREAT narrator!
