Publisher's Summary

This magnificent novel by one of America's finest writers is the epic of one man's remarkable journey, set in 19th-century America against the background of a vanishing people and a rich way of life.

At the age of 12, under the Wind Moon, Will is given a horse, a key, and a map, and sent alone into the Indian Nation to run a trading post as a bound boy. It is during this time that he grows into a man, learning, as he does, of the raw power it takes to create a life, to find a home. In a card game with a white Indian named Featherstone, Will wins, for a brief moment, a mysterious girl named Claire, and his passion and desire for her spans this novel.

As Will's destiny intertwines with the fate of the Cherokee Indians, including a Cherokee chief named Bear, he learns how to fight and survive in the face of both nature and man. Eventually, under the Corn Tassel Moon, Will begins the fight against Washington to preserve the Cherokee's homeland and culture. And he comes to know the truth behind his belief that "only desire trumps time".

Brilliantly imagined, written with great power and beauty by a master of American fiction, Thirteen Moons is a stunning novel about a man's passion for a woman, and how loss, longing, and love can shape a man's destiny over the many moons of a life.

Don't miss Charles Frazier's debut novel, Cold Mountain.

What the Critics Say

"A bountiful literary panorama....The history that Frazier hauntingly unwinds through Will is as melodic as it is melancholy, but the sublime love story is the narrative's true heart." (Publishers Weekly)

From AudioFile

Charles Frazier's combination of poetic prose and cracker-barrel plainness is tailor-made for Will Patton's familiar folksy voice. Patton plunges listeners into the life of frontiersman Will Cooper, the aged, cantankerous narrator. Patton shines as Cooper reflects on the natural world and somewhat reluctantly tells the story of his life from bound-boy to lawyer, from senator to white Indian chief experiencing the demise of the Cherokee Nation. Frazier's period diction and sense of place are uncanny, but stock characters and his romanticized vision become obstacles. Happily, Patton avoids falling into the ""bad"" soldier/""good"" Indian stereotype. His inflections create subtlety and human dimension on both sides. The book is good. Will Patton's performance is better. © AudioFile 2007

This is not usually the type of book I would read but I sure am glad I did. Charles Frazier writes so wonderfully. His words are vivid, beautiful, poetic. I could visualize everything! The story is about a man remembering his life as a white boy raised by Indians. Being a "bound" boy he is sent to work at a market on the outskirts of an Indian tribe. He ends up being adopted by Bear and learns Cherokee and the Cherokee ways. His heart is broken as Jackson orders all of the red men to head West to live in the "Nation". His heart aches for his one true love, Claire. Beautifully written, I can't give this one enough praise. I think I'll read Cold Mountain just to hear Frazier's luscious phrases once more.

The first 1/4 was so enjoyable, his beautiful horse, his lover... Don't read this if you have a soft spot for horses. It's occasionally beautiful but quite melancholy. Forlorn, but hard to relate to the female lead who for no apparent reason comes and goes. I'm not so sure about his portrayal of native Americans either. Still it's memorable for me.

This is one book I would buy in abridged format. The descriptions are artfully drawn but TEDIOUS. It could be an interesting story with interesting historical detail about a way of life on the frontier. The descriptions are often poetic, right down to the shape of spoons and hygiene and if you just like listening to poetry this could be your book. I almost quit listening on more than a few occasions. The narrative description was so long I would loose the thread of the story and have no idea what was happening in the story or where it was going. A good editor could abridge this into a listenable book on tape.

If you care about good storytelling grab this book right now as there is nothing better out there. It's amazingly good storytelling, with wonderful bitter-sweet story in entirely enjoyable language with few pinch of good humor here and there.

As a native of western North Carolina, reading Thirteen Moons was like a trip home. I could see myself walking the woodland paths of my youth, smelling the earthy odors of wet moss and crushed evergreens, and hearing the crackle of oak leaves underfoot. I heard the voice of my elders, speaking in a different time and place, when life moved at a slower pace.

Thirteen Moons left me homesick for youth and my beloved mountains. It left me yearning for Will Patten's voice. It made me book a flight home.

It's on the top of my "recommended reading" list.
